"The darkness. That’s what was setting Jake’s alarm bells off. Jake could see the apartment lights’ next door; the apartment buildings were so close that he could practically see the couple across the street fighting, the husband grabbing a chair and the wife sobbing, curled up in the corner. Their lights were all flipped on, the light racing across the alleyway, blazing against the hard-packed brick, across the alleyway and up the eight stories of graying, crumbling brick and then…. Nothing. The light seemed to stop before it could hit Agony’s bedroom window."
