"OPINION | The Hidden Message Behind Bypoll Results in Six States

It is generally argued that by-election results are predictable, as the ruling party gets the prize. However, elections to six states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra and Telangana have given a verdict contrary to the established norms.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won four of the six bypolls in 2022.

Imagine this, if the results were contrary to the declared wins, that, too, before the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh state elections, the media headlines would have given their judgement that ‘finally an end to the BJP in Gujarat’ and ‘the going in Himachal is tough’. TV channels would have had a field day informing their viewers that all is not well for the BJP.

Let us analyse the results below.

THE ANALYSIS

Seven seats went for bypolls, the BJP contested only six and gave a pass to the Mumbai Andheri East seat. So the BJP contested only six of seven. One, in the run-up to any election, wins are always a morale booster for the cadre of their election-going state.

Second, winning Bihar’s Gopalganj seat and Odisha’s Dhamnagar are certainly important scorecard ticks for the BJP as they go against the established norms that the ruling party wins bypolls.

Third, the grand alliance-engineering of Nitish Kumar suffered at the hands of the party alliance he had left.

Fourth, reality checks for Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) that his years of winning charisma are fading away.

Fifth, despite the grand alliance of seven political parties in Bihar, the voters chose the BJP. This is a clear signal for those who consider adding the vote percentage of castes as an unbeatable winning formula. The voter is looking at chemistry and not social engineering.

Sixth, Arvind Kejriwal’s power freebies offer to the voters was rejected and his road shows in Haryana’s Adampur seat were only hypes, giving a message to freebies politicians that voters want good governance like BJP’s Modi model.

Seventh, Telangana’s Munugode seat has a message for the Congress that Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is not helping the diminishing grand old party, like in all other states of India.

Eighth, the next round in Telangana will witness a fierce contest between the TRS and BJP.

Ninth, the rise of Owasi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) as the third player in Bihar is significant.

Tenth, Uttar Pradesh’s Gola Gokarannath win is significant as the seat is in Lakhimpur Kheri, the eastern epicentre of earlier farmers’ agitation. The message is clear that farmers’ unions amplify and distort their influence on the peasantry.

Lastly and most sacredly, the voters’ belief in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the tireless election machinery of workers created by former National BJP President Amit Shah.

"Zimbabwe Launches First Nano-Satellite To Help Boost Agriculture – NDTV

Zimbabwe’s plans to launch the satellite started in 2018.

Harare:

Zimbabwe on Monday announced the launch of its first nano-satellite into space in a bid to help collect data to monitor disasters, boost agriculture and enhance mineral mapping.

A rocket carrying the tiny satellite, dubbed ZIMSAT-1, successfully launched from Virginia in the United States alongside Uganda’s first satellite as part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) multi-nation project.

“History unfolding.#ZimSat1 now space bound!” government spokesman Nick Mangwana wrote in a tweet. “This is a scientific milestone for the country.”

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) tweeted Monday the rocket “will carry experiments about plant mutations and mudflow structure, as well as satellites from Japan, Uganda & Zimbabwe”.

Zimbabwe’s plans to launch the satellite started in 2018, less than a year after President Emmerson Mnangagwa came into office following the removal of veteran ruler Robert Mugabe through a military coup.

He created the Zimbabwean National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) to promote research and innovation in the embattled southern African nation.

The launch of the satellite — barely the size of a shoebox — sparked much debate on social media with some hailing the government for the achievement while others mocked the effort.

“Launching a satellite when the economy is fragile is stupidity. Poverty has for the past 5yrs increased. You can’t buy a car when your family is starving,” tweeted @patriot263.

The cost of the satellite has not been divulged.

In late September, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected Zimbabwe’s economic growth to slump to around half of last year’s levels due to growing fiscal instability and a drop in agricultural output.

Zimbabwe’s economy has been struggling for two decades forcing many citizens to emigrate in search of greener pastures.

Government blames the economic woes on Western-imposed sanctions, but critics fault Harare’s mismanagement and corruption.

"G20 Religion Forum Gathers Ahead of Summit in Bali, Indonesia

Called the R20 for short, this year’s inaugural Religion Forum is set to reconvene with next year’s G20 in India and then the following year in Brazil.

The catholicism of Catholicism is what makes our faith so vital today. For too long, conversations about religion have forced the faithful to choose between commitments that should not be seen as separate. We can worship God and cherish the environment. We can worship God and look after the less fortunate. Last week in Bahrain, Pope Francis reiterated these commitments. Catholics will be pleased to know that not only was he warmly received, but many of our moral commitments have increasingly broad support.

In a matter of days, the world’s most powerful leaders will gather in Bali for the annual G20. The Indonesian Island of Bali is hosting the 20 largest economies in the world as they struggle to contain the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, address tremendous economic uncertainty and debate how to work together in an era of increasing suspicion and outright hostility. Probably religion will not be high on their agenda — at least not the kind of religion we preach.

For some leaders, religion is at most an afterthought. For others, it is a purely personal matter. And for some, sadly, it’s a weapon used to divide their populations and conquer their political systems. (That, for example, is the case in India, where a Hindu party has become increasingly aggressive toward Muslim and Christian minorities.) But maybe this is because their understanding of religion limits and in fact denigrates faith. It is a tool they wield, as opposed to a process they submit to. Not a practice of refinement, but a means of self-satisfaction.

In that regard, the Vatican’s authority often confounds world leaders, who cannot understand how to relate to a Church that engages the world, works with the world, but refuses to limit itself to the world. If we are honest, Catholics have also been harmed by this fact — our Church is sometimes dismissed and sometimes even viewed as a threat. Which is why what happened in Bali ahead of the summit is so exciting. As part of the G20, but unfolding days before world leaders arrive, this year’s gathering included the first-ever Religion Forum on Nov. 2-3.

Called the R20 for short, this inaugural Religion Forum is set to reconvene with next year’s G20 in India and then the following year in Brazil.

This year’s R20 that took place in Indonesia has additional significance. Indonesia is of course the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. It is also a secular democracy; while its democratic record is more recent, its commitment to secularism dates to its founding, after independence from the Dutch following World War II. Would it surprise Catholic readers to know that this commitment to secularism has long been supported by some of the most faithful Muslims in the country, including its largest religious organization?

Called Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, this group led by senior Indonesian clerics counts tens of millions of Indonesians as members. For the R20, it has partnered with the Muslim World League, the Islamic world’s largest non-governmental organization. The Muslim World League is headed by a senior Saudi Arabian Scholar, Dr. Abdul Karim Al-Issa, and is based in his native Saudi Arabia. That location gives it tremendous influence among Muslim communities around the world. What it is doing with that influence is remarkable.

The Muslim World League has become an increasingly resolute advocate for moderation, pluralism and tolerance — including in the cause of religious freedom. Neither group wants narrow religious edicts to be enforced upon diverse populations, and both groups are more than willing to commit to that in public fora. Their dedication to the R20, which has attracted senior faith leaders from all the world’s great traditions, exemplifies this promising trend in Muslim religios

"A Life That Almost Wasn’t: The Pro-Life Witness of Sister Maria Bernadette of the Cross

BOOK FEATURE: The compelling story of a Polish nun who was a near-victim of abortion — and whose vocation was confirmed by one of John Paul II’s homilies. ‘The issue of the unborn was always important to Sister Bernadette.’

Just days before new reports began circling this spring regarding the leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, it was announced that Arouca Press had published a timely translation of the biography of a Polish nun who herself was the near-victim of abortion.

For Their Sake I Consecrate Myself, by Benedictine Sister Jadwiga Stabińska, gives the English-speaking world a glimpse into the life of Sister Maria Bernadette of the Cross, whose relatively short life was an inspiring testimony to the religious vocation as well as to pro-life causes.

An Energetic, Talented Youth

Born Róża Maria Wolska on July 3, 1927, the girl who would become Sister Bernadette in religious life was the third child — and first daughter — of Kazimierz and Anna Wolska. Growing up near Lviv, Poland (in what is now western Ukraine), her childhood was spent enjoying the outdoors and playing with the farm animals on their family estate. Relatives and friends described her as an exceptionally active child; her mother noted in a journal entry that “she was always rushing around like a young hound dog … she climbed hazel trees like a squirrel.” Her cousin Danuta described her as “strong-willed” and a “spitfire.”

In her teens, Róża took to playing volleyball in the summer months and grew to develop a variety of other hobbies and talents, including poetry, singing, sewing and reading. A descendant of several well-known and gifted Polish painters, Róża fostered a great gift for painting that remained active through the rest of her life.

A Journey in Faith

Religion was certainly present in the Wolska home, but possibly in a sense more cultural than overly pious during Róża’s youth. She had vague memories of her first Holy Communion and felt that she had not been very well prepared for receiving Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Writing as a religious many years later, she did recall an illustrated Gospel book at the family estate, a memory of which she said saved her “from many misfortunes.”

In her formative years, she was a witness to the Second World War, and it was during the later years of the war that Róża’s attention to and interest in religion began to grow. Even though she acknowledged periods of her life when she “closed [herself] off from God,” she recognized “His Mercy persistently chases after us in spite of everything.”

Living as a young adult in southern Poland, near Kraków, Róża took advantage of local spiritual retreats and was introduced to the Benedictine Order, which had a community of monks in Tyniec. After the war, she became a lay oblate of Tyniec, choosing the name Bernadette after the saintly visionary of Lourdes.

The religious life grew more and more attractive to Róża, and a pivotal moment in her discernment came as the fruit of listening to a sermon about the Blessed Virgin Mary by Father Karol Wojtyła (later Pope St. John Paul II), who was then a vicar of St. Florian parish in Kraków. Father Wojtyła was giving a series of May reflections on St. Louis de Montfort’s spiritual classic, True Devotion to Mary. This devotion emphasizes the necessity of humility, “which God loves above all other virtues.”

“A soul which exalts itself
