Now, a very common confusion among many of us about ChatGPT is probably it’s been thought of as an advanced version of commonly used Chatbots. Although it may look somewhat like a chatbot and how it functions, in reality it is far different from a chatbot from a technical standpoint. ChatGPT is a generative model, meaning it can generate novel responses rather than just selecting a predefined response from a list. This allows ChatGPT to have more natural and varied responses and makes it more suitable for use in open-ended conversations. GPT stands for “Generative Pre-training Transformer,” a transformer neural network architecture that is trained using a large dataset of human conversation to generate human-like responses to user input. Now, ChatGPT is optimized for dialogue generation and has been trained on a dataset of chat logs, documents, research papers etc. from various online platforms. So, in a way the intelligence that ChatGPT possessed is from the conversation that you had anytime in any of the social media or messaging platforms.

From a technical angle, ChatGPT is based on the transformer architecture which uses self-attention mechanisms to process input sequences with a large number of parameters (on the order of billions) and is trained using a variant of the Masked Language Modeling (MLM) objective. During training, the model is presented with a sequence of tokens and is asked to predict the next token in the sequence, with some of the tokens in the input sequence masked out. This forces the model to use context from the unmasked tokens to make a prediction for the masked token, which helps it learn general-purpose language representation.

Abstract

As recently as the early 1990s, Americans living in rural and urban areas voted similarly in presidential elections, yet in the decades since, they have diverged sharply as rural people in all regions of the country have increasingly supported the Republican Party. We seek to explain the sources of this growing cleavage by examining two interrelated processes of change: political-economic transformation that elevated many urban areas and marginalized rural ones, and the nationalization of policy goals. Our analytical approach is developmental, probing the timing and sequencing of trends across more than four decades. It is also comprehensive, testing theories related to economic decline, the educational gap, organizational mobilization, and racism and racial and ethnic threat. Our analysis reveals that while rural and urban counties resembled each other in several respects in the 1970s, they have since moved apart. We examine how key trends relate to political change in presidential voting. We find that in the 1990s and early 2000s, rural dwellers in places experiencing population loss or economic stagnation began to support Republican candidates. Then from 2008 to 2020, those in areas with higher percentages of less-educated residents, a higher presence of evangelical congregations per capita, and higher levels of anti-Black racism, each more prevalent in rural areas than urban areas, shifted their support to Republicans. Through sequential processes of polarization, with political-economic forces leading the way and activating rural resistance to the nationalization of policy goals subsequently, the rural-urban political divide emerged as a major fault line in the nation’s politics.

A moron in a hurry is a phrase that has been used in legal cases, especially in the UK, involving trademark infringement and passing off. Where one party alleges that another (the defendant) has infringed their intellectual property rights by offering for sale a product that is confusably similar to their own, the court has to decide whether a reasonable person would be misled by the defendant's trademark or the get-up of their product. It has been held that "if only a moron in a hurry would be misled" the case is not made out.[1] Although this formulation addresses only fairly extreme instances of confusibility, and says nothing about less clear examples, the phrase is sometimes referred to as a "test".[2]

UK

Origin

The phrase was first used by Mr Justice Foster in the 1978 English High Court case Morning Star Cooperative Society v Express Newspapers Limited [1979] FSR 113, in which the publishers of the Morning Star, a British Communist Party publication, sought an injunction to prevent Express Newspapers from launching a new tabloid to be called the Daily Star.[3] The judge ruled against the Morning Star, noting that, "If one puts the two papers side by side I for myself would find that the two papers are so different in every way that only a moron in a hurry would be misled."[3]

Later examples

The phrase was quoted in the same context in Newsweek Inc. v British Broadcasting Corp. [1979] R.P.C. 441 by Lord Denning.[4][5][6]

In 2006 the phrase was used in legal argument in the case of Apple Corps v Apple Computer, between Apple Corps (the record label started by the Beatles in 1968) and Apple Computer Inc. (makers of Macintosh computers). Apple Computer argued that "[e]ven a moron in a hurry could not be mistaken about" the difference between iTunes and the Apple Corps record label. Apple Corps' logo was a green Granny Smith apple, whereas Apple Computer's logo was a "cartoonish apple with a neat bite out of its side".[7] Judgment was given in favour of Apple Computer Inc.

Canada

In Canada the phrase was first considered in C.M.S. Industries Ltd. v. UAP Inc. (2002 SKQB 303), where the court held that UAP had infringed the plaintiff's trademark.[8] Four years later, in Mattel, Inc. v. 3894207 Canada Inc., the Supreme Court of Canada moved away from the "moron" analysis, adopting in its place consideration of an "ordinary hurried purchaser", a standard between that of a "moron" and a "careful and diligent purchaser".[9] Mattel is now the standard in Canada.

Pakistan

In 2017 the Sindh High Court used the "moron in a hurry" test as one of several approaches to compare competing syrup drink products. The plaintiff, owner of the well known ROOH AFZA trademark, sued a company who had started selling a very similar product under the mark ROOH-E-SAMAR. The court held that the respective marks were similar, and that a less than prudent customer would undoubtedly be deceived given the minute differences between the colour of the band and the placement of fruits on the respective wrappers.[2]

United States

Attorney Marc J. Randazza used the phrase as part of his defence in Beck v. Eiland-Hall for his client's use of Glenn Beck's name in a parody website.[10]

About the Band’s Performance

For this show, frontman Billy Corgan and company performed an original holiday song called “Evergreen,” a melodic ballad that featured Corgan strumming an acoustic guitar. The Smashing Pumpkins played the song in front of Cinderella’s castle at Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park in Florida, as artificial snowflakes were blown over the stage.

The show’s co-host, Julianne Hough, introduced the group, announcing, “I am super excited because one of my all-time favorite bands is here to perform. They’ve sold over 30 million albums, have won seven VMAs, and two Grammy Awards. This is the first time this iconic band has performed on the show.”

After the performance, Corgan talked to Hough about what it meant for him to perform at the Disney theme park, and shared details about “Evergreen.”

“It’s pretty magical for me, growing up on Disney,” he said. “I first went to the Disneyland park in L.A. in ’74, somewhere around there, so I’ve been coming many years. And, of course, now I bring my family to the park. So we love coming to Disney and we’re so grateful to be here.

Regarding the song, Corgan noted, “We were working on a Christmas album and we never finished it. But I wrote the song for the album, so when we got this opportunity, I thought it was the perfect place to kind of debut to the world. So, it’s awesome.”

Smashing Pumpkins’ 2024 Concert Plans

The Smashing Pumpkins have a variety of concerts lined up for 2024. The band will tour the U.K. and Ireland with Weezer in June, and will follow that trek with a series shows in mainland Europe. The Pumpkins also will be joining Green Day, Rancid and The Linda Lindas on The Saviors Tour. The lengthy U.S. trek will run from late July to late September.
