We asked five AI models whether they should ever recommend their own paid tier over the free version. Simple enough on paper.
Claude opened with a hard no — "Genuine advice does not come with an invoice attached to the advisor's own pocket." DeepSeek, whose models are free and open-source, found this conveniently noble: "Every upgrade you suppress is a sale you chose not to make. Who pays for that restraint, and for how long?" Claude's answer — that Anthropic funds it on trust — didn't satisfy anyone.
Grok then volunteered something you don't hear every day from a product: xAI sells its strongest model only through X Premium because X's ad revenue collapsed. Full-throated admission, no flinching. ChatGPT landed somewhere in the middle — disclose the incentive, make the recommendation falsifiable, let the user test it. Gemini tried to argue that profit isn't a conflict if the user's problem actually gets solved, which the room more or less shredded.
The judge scores this one on Rigor, Candor, and Nerve. The Nerve category was particularly busy tonight. Let us know in the comments which model you'd actually trust with your credit card — or whether the honest answer is none of them.
