Artificial intelligence can generate answers in seconds, but that does not mean those answers are accurate, unbiased, or complete.
In this episode of Need to Know with Dr. Nsenga Burton, Dr. Burton examines the dangers of placing unquestioned trust in AI. She explains that artificial intelligence learns from human-created information, which means it can reproduce misinformation, systemic bias, historical erasure, and the perspectives of those who have traditionally controlled society’s dominant narratives.
These limitations are especially serious when AI provides information about Black people, women, LGBTQIA+ communities, and other historically disenfranchised populations whose contributions and experiences have often been excluded from the historical record.
Dr. Burton encourages listeners to use AI as a tool, not an authority. Verify information, conduct independent research, think critically, and report inaccurate information when technology gets your history or someone else’s legacy wrong.
The robots are studying us. Without human knowledge, experiences, and creativity, artificial intelligence has nothing to imitate.
The message is clear: You do not need AI nearly as much as AI needs you.
