Black men are dying at a rate America cannot explain away.
Although America’s national murder rate is declining, Black men and Black youth continue to experience a devastatingly disproportionate share of homicide. Why does this crisis remain so concentrated, and who must be held responsible?
In Part One of Black Lives Lost, Tony Tidbit and Chris P. Reed have an unfiltered conversation about community violence, systemic racism, economic inequality, access to guns, family responsibility, personal choices, policing, opportunity, and community accountability.
They challenge the politically weaponized phrase “Black-on-Black crime” and examine evidence from predominantly Black communities where higher incomes, lower poverty, and greater homeownership correspond with dramatically lower homicide rates.
But they do not use systemic barriers to erase individual responsibility. Tony and Chris confront the difficult question of whether families, churches, schools, elected officials, business leaders, and community members are doing enough to protect Black lives before another family is forced to plan a funeral.
