After taking a deliberate break over the summer, I came back to one question: are businesses actually prepared for the change AI is going to create?
I don’t think they are.
Not because they haven’t bought enough AI tools. But because most businesses are still trying to use AI inside an operating model that was designed for a world before AI existed.
In this episode of The AI Operating System Diaries, I share what we’re discovering from actually making this transition inside our own business and with estate agencies.
One of the biggest surprises is around people.
There’s a growing narrative that AI will wipe out junior roles and make experienced people even more valuable. What I’m seeing suggests something more complicated.
A large part of what businesses historically paid for with experience was knowledge. As knowledge becomes increasingly abundant, other human qualities become more valuable: ambition, commitment, empathy, curiosity, communication and the ability to learn.
It may become more valuable to build people than buy people.
There’s another paradox emerging too.
AI is removing work from the business — but at the same time, our new way of working is creating an almost unmanageable amount of new work.
The difference is that it isn’t administration.
It’s work connected to opportunities, customers, conversations and potentially revenue.
So perhaps the future isn’t simply fewer people.
Perhaps it is fewer people doing work that machines should have been doing in the first place — and more human capacity directed towards the things that actually grow the business.
I also talk about why automating emails and adding AI features to existing processes misses the bigger shift, and why the real advantage will belong to businesses prepared to redesign how they operate.
I’ll be continuing this conversation in person at Estate Agency X 11: The New Advantage, where I’ll be talking about what we’re learning from the front line of building an AI operating model in estate agency.
Because access to AI won’t be the advantage.
What you change because of it will be.
