Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) is warning against single-pilot flights, arguing they compromise safety.

AIPA claims single pilots could become overwhelmed in an emergency. This is despite a UN body that sets aviation standards being asked by more than 40 nations to help make single pilot flights a reality as early as 2027.

Mark Hofmeyer, Qantas First Officer and Vice President of the Australian and International Pilots Association, told 6PR Mornings that a medical episode for a pilot, or even the simplest notion of needing to go to the toilet, are issues that can't be ignored.

"Realistically whilst it might be something that they can technically achieve, it will compromise safety as at the end of the day we think that two well trained and rested pilots on the flight deck is the safest way to operate these machines," Mr Hofmeyer said.
