Strain of the Week: Strawberry Shurbert: Strawberry Daiquiri x Rainbow Sherbet. It’s a sativa dominant hybrid, accompanied by a 30% indica feel.  Being a sweet, yet intoxicating strain, the effects are strongly cerebral while offering aid in focus, energy and mood boosting. -New Jersey Department of Health removed the ban that prohibited licensed medical cannabis dispensaries from selling concentrates to patients. Separately, details arose about New Jersey’s soon-to-be-filed marijuana legalization bill, which includes what would be the lowest tax rate in the country, home delivery, social consumption sites, and provisions benefiting small and minority owned businesses, but nothing about home cultivation. Nothing is final yet.

-Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Gov. Ralph Torres (R) signed a marijuana legalization bill into law, making the territory the first place in the U.S. to end prohibition without first having a medical cannabis program.

-California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed two bills into law this week,  one preventing marijuana businesses from sharing consumers’ information for commercial purposes, and another clarifying that marijuana distributors can transport products to other distributors and that labs can test home-grown cannabis. Brown also vetoed a bill that would have allowed marijuana businesses to deduct business expenses under the state’s personal income tax law.

-Federal - Decriminalize Cannabis: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is sponsoring the Marijuana Freedom and Opportunity Act, to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and to provide funding for the expungement of criminal records for those with past marijuana convictions.

Powdery Mildew:

-High moisture could lead to PM and bud rot.  They sometimes come together.

-It’s a fungus that will grow on top or upper part of the leaf

-conidiophore. Conidium, a type of asexual reproductive spore of fungi (kingdom Fungi) usually produced at the tip or side of hyphae (filaments that make up the body of a typical fungus) or on special spore-producing structures called conidiophores.

-RH:  Think of it this way, 60% relative humidity in a room means 60% of that air is holding water.  The warmer air the more water vapor it can hold. As the air cools, the vapor turn back into water falls as dew.  The bigger the swing between daytime highs and nighttime lows, the more moisture is going to fall on the plants.

-The cells of fungi have nuclei that contain the chromosomes and other organelles, such as mitochondria and ribosomes. Bacteria are much smaller than fungi, do not have nuclei or other organelles and cannot reproduce sexually.

- Manhattan’s district attorney is moving to vacate misdemeanor marijuana warrants. He appeared in court to move to dismiss 3,000 marijuana cases dating back to 1978.

- U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), one of Congress’s more ardent drug warriors—signed on as a cosponsor of the STATES Act, to remove the threat of federal intervention and prosecution in states that regulate marijuana use and sales

- New Mexico’s health secretary approved adding obstructive sleep apnea as a medical cannabis qualifying condition, but rejected adding opioid addiction, muscular dystrophy, Tourette’s syndrome, eczema and psoriasis.

How to choose Hemp derived CBD.

-The 2014 Farm Bill defines hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3% THC in any part of the plant; if the THC level tops 0.3%, it’s considered to be marijuana under federal law.

-Both THC and CBD come mainly from the leaves, resin, or flowering tops of the plants, not the stem. Nearly all products that contain THC also contain CBD. But CBD is often sold and used on its own.

Importantly, hemp oil—found in soaps, cosmetics, and other products—is not the same as CBD oil. Hemp oil comes primarily from seeds of the plant, and the seeds contain only very small amounts of CBD

-The last few years, several non-cannabinoid plant natural products have been reported to act as cannabinoid receptor ligands. This prompts us to define ‘phytocannabinoids’ as any plant-derived natural product capable of either directly interacting with cannabinoid receptors or sharing chemical similarity with cannabinoids or both.

-Note that 'phyto' is simply a prefix meaning "pertaining to derived from plants."

- phytocannabinoids do appear in other types of plants such as the Echinacea purpurea,

- Not a big fan of hemp derived CBD,  There aren’t a lot of cannabinoids in Hemp so it takes more to a small amount of oil.

-high CBD strains; Harlequin, Sour Tsunami, Jamaican Lion, Cannatonic, ACDC, Charlotte’s Web, and Valentine X) ranged from 8 to 10% CBD and 5.5 to 7% THC—about a 3:2 CBD:THC ratio.

-Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) signed an industrial hemp bill into law, and he also signed legislation allowing people prescribed opioids to use medical cannabis instead.

-Delaware Gov. John Carney (D) signed legislation to expunge some marijuana convictions, as well as a bill to expand the state’s medical marijuana program.

-Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

House Bill 20-178 would end cannabis prohibition for adults over 21 and create a system of taxed and regulated sales. It would also allow medical marijuana and industrial hemp. The bill was already approved by the House earlier this month.

Update: On 8/30, HB 20-178 was unanimously passed by the Senate. The bill now awaits action from Governor Ralph Torres (R).

More Locally

- The Dayton, Ohio City Commission voted to place an advisory question on the November ballot asking voters if they support decriminalizing marijuana.

-The Ashland, Wisconsin City Council approved a resolution calling on state lawmakers to legalize marijuana and medical cannabis.

Calculating edibles dosage

Cannabis

1 gram of cannabis = 1000 milligrams

If cannabis has 25% THC

25% of 1000 milligrams is 250 milligrams

I.e.  3.6g (⅛ oz) of cannabis = 3600 milligrams

       25% THC of 3600 =  900 mg THC

Extracted into 1 cup (8 oz) of butter, the butter will now have 900 mg of THC.

Dosage

When you use 1/2 cup of that butter to make 36 cookies, then 

that batch will have 450 milligrams. Divide 450 mg by the number of cookies.  For 36 cookies there will be about 12.5 milligrams of THC in each cookie.

High heat outdoors

- Cannabis virtually stops growing at 85ﾟF, generally but that depends on strain.  Some equitorial strains like hot humid weather Sativas (Thailand, Cambodia, Jamaica and Brazil. ) more commercially a Haze, Trainwreck,   if you're planting in a hot climate make sure plants receive filtered or dappled sunlight during the heat of the day (use shade cloth). Also plant them in natural breeze ways so breeze will cool them during the heat of the day

- Also leaves store heat. At about 100ﾟ the internal chemistry of the leaf is disrupted and the proteins and sugars that are locked away in the leaves are broken down and become unavailable to the plan.

-Don't let your plants dry out, you want the soil a little moist to keep the microbial life alive.   Remember you don't have to add nutrients every time you water black children drink more water on really hot days.

-You also don't want the plants really wet because that wet soil will heat up.Wet hot soil holds less oxygen and cool moist soil.  That hot, wet, less oxygenated soil will breed fungi that could causes root rot.

-Increase potassium (K) to help plant  deal with high heat.  (K) plays a big part in how easily a plant transpires (breaths or sweats like humans) Kelp (1-0.1-2)and Neem (6-1-2)

Potassium silicate is a common nutrient additive that gives plants the building blocks for protecting against stress and excessive moisture loss in hot climates. Watch pH, more alkaline up 10-13.
