Angus breeders have long focused on what drives ultimate demand for their genetics: consumer demand.
Jim Brinkley, Milan, Mo., who served as the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Board chair this past year, shares that’s more evident than ever in this year where fed cattle numbers declined 3%, but supply increased slightly. CAB sales totaled 1.227 billion pounds.
“CAB with what they’ve accomplished this year and the future sure looks bright for them,” Brinkley says. “Quality beef, it's not going to go out of style.”
From strong bull sales to advancements in the breed, Brinkley says there’s a lot of reasons for optimism across the industry.

When you’re No. 1, it takes internal drive to keep pushing forward.
Barry Pollard, recently elected president and chairman of the American Angus Association Board of Directors, says the breed has that going for it. From staff to Board members to involved breeders at every level, they’ve been making improvements this past year and he says he looks to continue that in the coming year.
They’ve added new expected progeny differences (EPDs), and while that may seem overwhelming to some, Pollard says, it allows for the most complete genetic characterization of Angus cattle.
“It gives every member a chance to pick out those EPDs that are most important to them in the herd that they’re trying to design for themselves,” he says. “So those types of things are going to be necessary to keep us on top.”
Hear Pollard’s thoughts on the importance of the commercial cattlemen and what he’s most looking forward to in the year ahead.

A conservative approach to the budget, while remaining aggressive in delivering tools and services — that’s how newly elected vice president and vice chairman of the Board, Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tenn., describes the American Angus Association’s approach to financials.
Every entity had a positive bottom line, and managed to balance revenue even as inflation grew costs as well.
The Association has a strong investment portfolio, which rebounded to an 11% gain after last year’s 15% loss. Nearly 70% of that investment income is restricted, or earmarked for specific needs that the previous Board identified such as building maintenance, technology upgrades or scholarships.
“We had a great year. Just remember that one of the reasons we are where we are today is because we had foresight in individuals that sat on this board way before we did that watched that bottom line and left the funds available for us to be able to utilize them when things came along that we needed to add to or invest in for our membership.”
Listen to the Tennessee cattle breeder give a full update in this piece from the recent Angus Convention.
