We question whether the mind continues to generate internal sensory experiences—even in aphantasia, where “imageless imagery” might still emerge (Chang et al., 2025). Our conversation examines how autism, with its sensory overload, may amplify external inputs to such an extent that inner experiences are overshadowed, prompting a discussion on whether practices like sensory deprivation, meditation, and brainwave stimulation (via binaural beats, isochronic tones, and SSVEP) can restore balance. We further explore the spectrum from aphantasia to hyperphantasia, considering possible correlations with heightened hypnotic responsiveness, and delve into techniques in memory work, hypnosis, psychedelics, lucid dreaming, and even polyphasic sleep cycles. Does aphantasia truly impact therapeutic change if our minds continuously craft imagery outside conscious awareness? Can minds learn how to visualise?

Dr Paulina Trevena is a hypnotherapist and a researcher, with 18 years’ experience in academic research. Paulina, who is neurodivergent with aphantasia and ADHD, specialises in supporting people with these conditions. During her hypnosis training, she realised having aphantasia was a barrier to experiencing hypnosis – and started a research project into aphantasia and hypnosis. Lee is a hypnotherapist, NLPist, and for the main focus of this interview, an Animal Magnetist (or Mesmerist). There are very few of us out there that dive deep into this niche subject of energy and hypnosis. 

Animal Magnetism is a healing art that is the precursor of hypnosis, founded by Anton Mesmer in the mid to late 1700s. Because Mesmer was working with an unseen energy, or magnetic fluid as he called it, he was discredited and deemed a charlatan. However, this art was explored by many and didn't disappear then due to its genuine power and efficiency. It has now been mostly replaced with verbal hypnosis, but the two are very different.
