With Hurricane Helene bearing down on the Gulf Coast and throwing off storms, we’re changing pace this week to revisit some old episodes we’ve recorded with our friends at the various Waterkeepers organizations.
First up, we have Justinn Overton with Coosa Riverkeepers reporting on the Coosa RIver. Justinn monitors the waterways around Weiss Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Lake Jordan, Lay Lake, and Neely-Henry. She’s an avid outdoorswoman and environmentalist that has the information you need to know to keep you and your family safe while you’re out on the Coosa Lake Systems this weekend.
Next up, we have Will Strickland, Executive Director of Mobile Baykeeper. Will is an avid fisherman, a competent wing shot, and a passionate defender of our state’s waterways. Catch-and-eat anglers will definitely want to listen until the end to learn about local fish consumption advisories and where you can find information on them in order to keep you and your family safe and healthy
Finally, we talk with Cahaba Riverkeeper David Butler. While we talk a good bit on this show about the Chattahoochee, Tennessee, and Coosa Rivers, but the Cahaba is very much a “forgotten gem” of a river that every fisherman should get out on at least once to experience some truly wild fishing.

In this episode, host Nick Williams welcomes special guest Logan Parks, a seasoned angler from Auburn, Alabama. Logan is known for founding the Auburn High School bass fishing team and later winning the 2021 Bass Pro Shops Open with Tucker Smith, taking home a million-dollar prize. Logan shares insights on fishing near Auburn, emphasizing the diversity of local fisheries such as the Chattahoochee and Tallapoosa rivers, and Lake Martin, where he recently fished and caught numerous fish during the fall transition.
Logan details the top techniques that worked on Lake Martin, highlighting a shallow topwater bite, targeting baitfish using sonar, and fishing around shoals. He recommends using baits like the Berkley Chapo and jigheads to maximize success. With fish moving shallower due to cooling water temperatures, Logan expects the bite to improve even more in the coming weeks.
Logan also discusses the upcoming 2024 National Student Angler Networking Event (INSANE), hosted by the Logan Parks Fishing Foundation. This event connects high school and college anglers, offering them opportunities to showcase their skills and earn scholarships. Set for October 4-6 in Auburn, Alabama, the event features a draft where college anglers select high school partners, with cash prizes up to $25,000 for first place.
Next, Nick talks with Rowell Guevarra, who recently returned from a fishing trip to Alaska and Colorado. Rowell shares his experiences fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska, including fly fishing for salmon and rainbow trout, crabbing, and encountering bears. He contrasts the cool Alaskan weather and fishing conditions with the challenges of fishing in Alabama's heat. Rowell also shares tips for those interested in fly fishing trips and the benefits of hiring a guide when fishing in unfamiliar areas.
Finally, Rowell provides an update on the Tallapoosa River, noting improved water levels and fishing conditions due to recent rain. He encourages listeners to book trips with East Alabama Fly Fishing for a chance to experience the local rivers.

This week we sit down with Andre Davis, from Hoover, AL. Andre is here this week to talk about backcountry fishing, something that may not be familiar to a lot of our listeners. He emphasizes the joy of exploration and connecting with nature, even when the fishing may not be ideal, as the experience and scenery often make up for it. Andre also talks about hiking in with minimalist fishing gear, and offers a few tips on hammock camping. He also offers advice on how to find public lands for camping and fishing and discusses the importance of planning ahead and staying safe.
Next, we hear from Steve Graziano (Graz’s Guide Service) about Lake Eufaula. Graz reports that the recent cool weather has lowered water temperatures, which has triggered a stronger bite. While the lake levels remain relatively high due to dam work at West Point, the fall transition is beginning, and the topwater bite is heating up. Graz mentions how bass are following baitfish into creeks, with frogs, and walking baits like the Vixen proving effective. He also discusses alternative baits like drop shots, Texas rigs, and tail spinners for targeting both bass and white bass hybrids during this transitional period.

This week, Nick welcomes Taylor Hara from the Wiregrass region of southeast Alabama. Taylor discusses the impact of drought on water levels, noting that sandy rivers like the Sepulga and Choctawhatchee are difficult to navigate, while rockier streams still have enough flow for fishing. He has been focusing on bream fishing in narrow channels and outside bends, using poppers and beetle spins with success. Bass fishing has been slow due to heat, but is improving as the water cools, with topwater and spinnerbaits starting to produce bites.
Taylor He recommends micro spinners for bass, especially in darker waters, and talks about his recent encounter with a sturgeon in the Choctawhatchee River. The episode wraps up with a shout-out to the efforts of the Choctawhatchee Riverkeepers for protecting local water quality.
In the second segment, Nick is joined by Will Strickland, Executive Director of Mobile Baykeeper. Will discusses Mobile Baykeeper’s ongoing efforts to address issues like dredge material dumping, which harms vital habitats for fish and oysters. He also highlights a partnership with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers for a cleanup project targeting the Ghost Fleet area in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, where illegal dumping has been a problem.
Will shares his personal connection to Alabama's waters, recounting memories of fishing and hunting with his grandfathers and their deep respect for conservation. He emphasizes the importance of community involvement in environmental protection, noting that each generation has a responsibility to preserve natural resources. Will encourages listeners to stay informed about water quality, fish consumption advisories, and to advocate for stricter regulations on toxins entering Alabama's waterways.

Dip McMillan kicks off this week's report with a recap of a successful fishing tournament held at Hubbard’s Landing, where they saw a fantastic turnout with 156 kids and 29 boats in the adult division. Every child walked away with a prize, and the event was a massive success, thanks to the support of the community and sponsors. Dip also shares his recent win at a crappie tournament at Banks Lake. Despite tough conditions, he made a strategic change in tactics by using a cork with a minnow, which led to a series of big crappie catches and ultimately secured his victory. Dip predicts that as temperatures drop in mid to late September, the fishing will improve significantly, particularly for crappie. He also mentions his plans for next year's tournament, with sponsors already lining up to support the event.
Peter Jordan of Lost Angler Fly Shop discusses the current fishing conditions on the Delta. Despite the hot weather and drought, Peter highlights some unique fly fishing opportunities, including targeting native species like buffalo carp and bowfin. He explains that while bass might be seeking cooler, deeper waters, species like carp and gar are still active and can provide an exciting challenge for fly anglers. Peter also talks about the upcoming Labor Day weekend and the importance of preserving the creeks and rivers for everyone to enjoy. He encourages anglers to explore the Blackwater creeks, which will soon be less crowded, offering a great chance for wade fishing.
Drew Morgan from East Alabama Fly Fishing shares his insights on the challenging conditions on the Tallapoosa River due to low water levels and clear water, which makes fish more skittish. However, he notes that wade fishing can be particularly rewarding this time of year. As fall approaches, Drew anticipates better fishing conditions with the cooling weather and the potential for increased water flow from upstream reservoirs. He suggests trying out different fly patterns and colors as fish become more active. Drew also mentions that fall is a great time for fishing trips, with more availability due to fewer people fishing and more focus on hunting season.

The Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between.
Cahaba River Report: Steven Rockarts joins from Central Alabama, noting cooler mornings and the excitement of fall approaching. He discusses how the current drought has led to low water levels, making fishing more challenging but rewarding when finding deeper pools. Topwater action has picked up significantly, and Steven emphasizes the importance of observing bass behavior in clear, low-water conditions, which can reveal patterns and improve fishing strategy.
Lake Eufaula Crappie Report: Tony Adams talks about the challenges of summer crappie fishing on Lake Eufaula, where high temperatures and an abundance of shad make it harder to get bites. Despite this, Tony has been successful using a combination of minnows, jigs, and spoons. He describes his technique of fishing deep near brush piles and emphasizes the importance of adjusting tactics to the crappie's less aggressive summer behavior. Tony also mentions dealing with mayfly hatches, which can complicate crappie fishing but can be countered with the right bait, like the Bobby Garland mayfly color.
Mobile Tensaw Delta Report: Captain Wayne Miller highlights the excellent fishing conditions in the Mobile Tensaw Delta, thanks to the migration of shrimp and clear water. This migration has brought a variety of species, including bass, redfish, and Jack Crevalle. Wayne explains his preference for fishing the main rivers during this time, using a mix of live bait, shrimp imitation baits like DOA and Voodoo, and soft plastics. He also advises anglers to be cautious when navigating the Delta's shallow waters, especially during low tide and strong north winds, which can create challenging conditions.

Alex Davis reports that despite the heat, there are promising signs of activity at Lake Guntersville. The water temperature is around 86°F, and recent cool nights have led to the first schooling activity of the year. Most schooling fish are smaller, around 14-15 inches, and they are feeding on tiny shad, making small lures like rooster tails and small swim baits effective. Deeper grass lines are also producing fish, especially with techniques like speed worm fishing in the early morning and evening. Punching through vegetation has started to yield results, with fewer bites but better quality fish. Alex emphasizes the importance of using the right gear and technique when punching, including a heavy rod and braid, and getting the fish moving quickly after the hook set.
Steve Graziano reports that fishing on Lake Eufaula is getting tougher as the water temperature reaches 91°F. The baitfish are breaking up into smaller schools, which has changed how bass are positioning themselves. While moving baits like crankbaits aren't as effective, anglers are still finding success with drop shots, Carolina rigs, and jigs. As we move into late September and October, cooler water temperatures should improve the fishing, particularly with an increase in topwater action and shallow bites.
Andrew Monahan from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BCHA) discusses the importance of maintaining public land and water access in Alabama. BCHA focuses on grassroots efforts like trash cleanups to keep these areas accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Andrew highlights the need for continued awareness and activism to protect public lands from being lost or restricted due to misuse or development. He also encourages those interested in conservation to get involved with BCHA and other local efforts to preserve Alabama's natural resources. Those interested can reach out to the Southeast Chapter of BCHA at [email protected].

In this episode of the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we dive into the fascinating world of the Gulf Sturgeon with our special guest, Dr. R. Scot Duncan. Raised on the shores of Pensacola Bay in Gulf Breeze, FL, he holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of Florida. His extensive research has taken him from the mangroves of Costa Rica to the forests of Uganda, focusing on restoration ecology. Scot has served as a professor at Birmingham-Southern College for two decades, and is now the Executive Director of Alabama Audubon. His book, Southern Wonder: Alabama's Surprising Biodiversity, is regarded as one of the best environmental books ever written about Alabama, and is used by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as a textbook for the Alabama Master Naturalist Program.
In his most recent book, Southern Rivers: Restoring America’s Freshwater Biodiversity, Scot celebrates the extraordinary biodiversity of southeastern rivers, highlighting their unique species and ecosystems. Through vivid storytelling, the book explores the critical importance of these waterways and offers insights into how we can prevent further extinctions amid increasing water demand and decreasing supply. Dr. Duncan provides a compelling narrative that underscores the urgency of conserving freshwater habitats to ensure the survival of America's diverse aquatic life. Key to that narrative is the Gulf Sturgeon, a fascinating gentle giant that can grow up to nine feet in length and weigh over 300 lbs. Once widespread and plentiful throughout Alabama’s rivers, today the species is under protection from the Endangered Species Act.
Join us as Scot walks us through the history of the species’ interactions with humans. Learn how sturgeon sustained the pilgrims of Plymouth, how it played a key role in making the Gulf states a powerhouse in the international seafood industry, and how it helped to keep Alabama’s rivers clear and clean. We’ll discuss the factors that caused the decline in sturgeon numbers, the knock-on effects of that decline, and what Scot hopes can be done to restore the species’ population and the health of our rivers.
Assisting us with the conversation this week is Rowell Guivarra. Rowel is a well-respected fly fishing guide who operates on the Tallapoosa River, as well as the Chair of the Alabama Chapter of the Native Fish Coalition. In addition to the work he does with NFC to support aquatic biodiversity in the state, he is also actively involved in Project OARS, the Mayfly Project, and Project Healing Waters. Rowell understands better than most how the health of Alabama’s riverine species is a vital factor in the physical, mental, and spiritual health of its citizens, and we’re delighted to have him co hosting this week.
