  • Episode 10. What’s In A Name?

It’s our small milestone with this episode as we’ve made it to ten (yay)! And ironically enough only now we got to talk about what algae really are? With so many, and I mean SO many, species of what we call algae out there it is only fair to ask a professional who knows a thing or two about them.

Luckily we didn’t have to go far as Jack and I are working for an algae growing factory, and there just happen to be a bunch of biologists lurking around. So one day Jack went out hunting and caught one of those, and then sat down with him to discuss the question of algal origin.

The conversation turned out to be pretty much interesting and we hope you enjoy it.

  • Episode 9. Seaweed Chef of Denmark

Hey, everyone, and welcome once again to our show about all things algae!

This week’s episode may be a little on a short side time-wise but it’s definitely not less important. Jack is at it again interviewing people and he likes it so much that he has no plans to stop.

His guest is Thorkil Johansson from Denmark who is a very passionate algae enthusiast and also an algae chef. Thorkil and Jack talk about how Thorkil got into eating seaweed, his Facebook community for use of seaweed in food and also how seaweed can help resolve some bowel movement issues (sic).

As always we’re waiting for your feedback and suggestions that you can send to [email protected]

And if you like what we’re doing with the show please consider rating the podcast on Apple Podcasts, this will help spread the word even further.

  • Episode 8. Algae in Design

Would you want algae to light up your room? Or keep your house cool? Or even power your stove with gas?

All these applications may sound futuristic and far away until they don’t. In this episode of the show Jack and I take a look at some of the ideas designers and architects around the world came up with and even made a reality. Alga chandelier, a house powered by algae, an algae covered skyscraper. They are more real than you think. Check out the episode and the links to the articles we discuss below.

  • Episode 7. Ireland’s First Female Botanist (with Frances Gallagher)

This show is our belated contribution to the International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month that happened in March. (Yeah, yeah, we’re one day late for March, we know. So much for the algae time machine)

To celebrate women in science, botany and phycology specifically, Jack talked to Frances Gallagher of the Ellen Hutchins Festival about Ireland’s first female botanist Ellen Hutchins.

Being a female scientist in the end the 18th century was not an easy fate, and as Frances and Jack go over Ellen’s life, they unfold an amazing story of a great talent finding its way despite everything. Should I say it also includes some detective elements too.

So, get ready for an exciting journey, and we’ll see you next time!

  • Episode 6. History of Phycology: The Final Frontier

It’s about time! Time to use our algae powered time machine for the last journey to the past of phycology. Yes, you read it right. In this episode we go back in time into the 19th century and then move forward to the present day.

Jack and I try to cover a lot of ground here, honestly, because the topic is huge! We go over some crucial and most important names in the science at the time, later on we talk about a very important invention that pushed phycology like maybe nothing before.

Finally, as it is our final historical episode for the meantime, we share our favourite stories we learned while doing our research for this series.

Go check it out, this episode came out really good in our opinion and we hope you will agree.

Hello there! Today is a special day, like in a “release a special episode” day, and you are in for a treat! Well, wonder no more, because this 1 hour long episode (one. hour.) answers all that. Soon after Jack came back home, we sat together and I interrogated interviewed him about all the things he saw and did there.

This is our longest episode so far and it just adds to how special it is to us. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it, and even more!

  • Episode 4. History of Phycology: Fathers of Phycology

We are back and oh boy what an episode we’ve got here for you! In this one, Jack and I both have a team of renowned phycologists of the past, and we have an argument who’s guys can be called the most important people in phycology. Or as Jack puts it, who has got the Avengers team of phycology?

To help us out in our conflict, we invited our friend and the friend of the show Richard Bull, and to the satisfaction of both parties he managed to find a quite unexpected solution. Listen to the episode to find out what it was.

So, here we have it. The Clash of Titans, the Battle of Five Two Armies, the Revenge of the Sith… The Civil War of phycology!

Personally, we had a lot of fun recording this episode and we hope you will have a lot of fun listening to it.

  • Episode 3. Deep Dive

    Algae + Beer = ?

In this episode, we take a little break from our time-travelling endeavours and instead of going far we go deep. Jack is joined by Richard, a friend of the show, and they discuss how algae are used in brewing beer.

A little bit of intro/background: Richard is a brewer in our local area, and he’s got extensive knowledge and experience in beer brewing both at home and for sale. As the conversation goes on Richard also shares some interesting insights about whiskey.

Seriously, when I listen to their beer/whiskey talk, I just want to grab myself a glass and enjoy the episode while sipping some good single malt.
