"If you are prepared to accept the status quo, to me that's part of the problem. You want to be part of the solution." - Alicia Quesnel
Alicia Quesnel was born in the mid-1960s, in a dysfunctional family with a traditional mother who had no financial capability and an alcoholic father. When she was 11 or 12, Alicia took a career test that suggested she become a lawyer. She wrote away to law schools and worked hard to pursue this career, eventually falling in love with oil and gas leases through her practice.
She worked on the LNG Canada Project and traveled across Asia to negotiate with foreign companies, learning the importance of patience, objectivity and not taking things personally. Through her career, Alicia learned that sponsorship is more important than mentorship when it comes to achieving success, and that diversity, equity and inclusion should be a goal for everyone--not just women.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How can we move the needle to create a more inclusive and gender balanced legal profession?2. What strategies can be used to combat affinity bias in the workplace?3. How can individuals broaden their horizons and develop well-rounded interests in order to become better lawyers and advisors?
