Rowan Reid runs Bambra Agroforestry Farm in the Otways of Victoria, a 42-hectare outdoor classroom for farmers, scientists, students and tree lovers, and a living laboratory for his own learning.

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne for decades, he also decided to try out the science in practice and started Bambra over 30 years ago, now growing more than 50 specialist timber species.

In his new book “Heartwood: The art and science of growing trees for conservation and profit” Rowan uses 15 species grown at Bambra to explore the fundamentals of tree growing and timber production, making the book relevant to farmers, foresters and conservationists around the world.

The organisation of trade, including our money system, is a primary source of many of the crises we are facing.

We invited Matthew Slater to Speak at the CoCanberra / NENA Canberra Region monthly meetup in July 2020.

Matthew Slater has been around the Mutual Credit scene for many years. He Co-founded one of the successful software platforms (Community Forge - https://communityforge.net/en ), taught about currencies through a Massive Open Online Course (the Money and Society MOOC - https://mooc1.communityforge.net/ ), travelled the world talking with communities, recorded audio books, written blogs, done heaps of other things, and generally been a good bloke!

The Food Co-op in Canberra has been around for decades.

Located on the campus of the Australian National University, the Co-op provides top quality foods, many direct from the farmers, at affordable prices.

There is also a busy cafe, and the Co-op hosts many meetings and events in the evenings.

Owned by its members, it is run by several part time co-managers and a vast horde of volunteers.

The Food Co-op Shop also hosts CoCanberra's monthly meetups, for which we are eternally grateful!

The Green Connect farm is one of the country’s leading examples of urban agriculture.

It is an 11-acre urban farm that uses permaculture and organic principles to produce fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey and free-range meat.

The farm is located on land behind Warrawong High School.

They have been developing the farm in order to:

- Create more jobs and employment pathways in a region with too few

- Fully utilise the land, activating the farm as a space in which the community can engage

- Expand our impact by sharing what we do (showing people what is possible and teaching and inspiring them to reduce waste and grow fair food themselves)

The Living Classroom has a 16-year history, seeded in the Illawarra region of NSW by Daniel Deighton and Aaron Sorensen who developed the program within Cringila Public School in 2003. The program’s success was then further supported by the development of the permaculture partnership within the Illawarra where local business, organisations, and council supported the programs implementation within the Warrawong Community of schools. This now includes a range of schools from primary through to tertiary institutions taking on the program.

It is an outdoor learning program where students learn practical life skills like designing their own vegetable gardens, growing and then preparing their own food and the importance of regenerative practices such as soil building, water saving and composting, all while getting out in nature and being active.

Unique to the program is an ambassador model of “kids teaching kids” where students engaged in the program are supported to be leaders of their Living Classroom.
