Alive and Active Life

The other day, I was pulling weeds in my vegetable garden. Fortunately, I found and uprooted most of the “little guys.” But there were some weeds that had been growing a bit longer. They were stubborn and tough. I had to get my fingers right down at their entrance into the earth, take a “death grip,” and pull with my whole body – just to get those “bigger guys” out of my garden! From the roots up, those weeds were supported . . . until my hands came along!

That illustration about weeds shows just how strong roots can be. They can support great structures above ground. Remember: roots are “under things” – under you. Roots stabilize and strengthen what is over them. They are invisible but they nurture what is visible. Roots are gnarly from experiences and struggles and they spread over a vast territory. Roots support you.

The world is full of roots. It’s not just plants. It’s architecture structures – bridges, buildings, tunnels, etc. Those structures need a strong foundation from the roots up.

People’s lives rise from the roots up. A person’s mind, emotions, memories, words, actions – your very soul – all are supported by what’s under you. If your roots aren’t healthy, even though they spread broadly beneath your life, they pull unhealthy components into your life.

So, I suppose it’s a worthy discussion to see what kinds of roots are healthy.

Have you asked yourself recently what kind of root system is under your life? Would you say you have a healthy root system that draws living water from Christ?

While exploring what is under our daily lives, an interesting Scripture comes to mind. In fact, I think it just might be the starting point for healthy roots.

“If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chron. 7:14)

First, this is a promise for God’s children called by His name (not those outside faith in Christ). How precious that God calls you His very own if you are a Jesus follower.

Next, I was struck by conditions God insists on. People sometimes expect God to keep His promises of blessing while they apply their own slant and agenda. It is not for mankind to decide God’s parameters. It’s solidly God’s right – because He is infinitely wise, loving, and good.

Third, when a person has no intention of cooperating, they often end up angry at God for not doing what they wanted Him to do – with their agenda in place rather than His.

So what are the conditions God insists on? There are 4:

Let’s look at each condition.

Before you can connect with God, you must have a sincere, repentant heart. This only comes from humbling yourself, acknowledging God is holy and perfect . . . and you are not. God doesn’t need you. He wants you. On the other hand, you need God and must decide if you truly want Him . . . more than anything else in life.

When you pray, if you are praying sincerely, you properly aligned yourself with God from your heart. A humble prayer means you automatically acknowledge His greatness, love, mercy, and grace. These are incredible gifts. Alignment means lining up with God in right relationship and perspective. Misalignment means “out-of-sync,” at odds, and the resulting consequences. Praying is a privilege. To talk to the greatest Person that exists is nothing short of a miracle. You can enter His holy presence only because of the blood of Jesus over you. You can pray anytime, any day, about anything.

It’s an incredible privilege to know God. The term “face to face” implies close relationship. When people look directly into one another’s face without fear, pride, or deception – it represents intimacy and trust.  You can pro-actively look into God’s face by faith – and not die! Friendship with God has quite a vast, dependable root system underneath it.

The critical requirement to receive a promise, intervention, or provision from God is turning from wicked ways. So, there IS a catch! God has conditions to His grace. We’ve already seen three of them – humble yourself, pray, seek His face. So now the big one – turn from wicked ways. That means deliberate change.

God is exceptionally understanding. He is your biggest cheerleader through steps of change. He coaches you as you train in righteousness, God’s Spirit transforms you.

Then there’s the partnership. You do your part out of gratitude. God does His part out of grace. You can’t partner with God if you haven’t turned from wicked ways, from unhealthy habits and patterns (put off), and in their place – establish new, godly habits and patterns (put on).

God is poised to fly into action when you simply lean His direction with the previous four heart conditions.

God will hear from Heaven. He will forgive. He will heal your heart.

This is how life is when things get tough. At first glance you see a rough scenario or rugged difficulty – suffering, hardship, and struggle. But when you pick up glasses of faith and put them on, you begin to see more. As your heart focuses on God, who He is, and what He does, your gaze sharpens. After obedience, you see tiny signs of what God is doing. Then a strange comfort, unexplainable joy, and deep hope sustains your heart. Something good is growing in your life – underneath – as your healthy roots expand in Jesus.

God’s purpose for you includes encouraging your heart, reinforcing accountability, healing with His love, growing your understanding. And then there’s realizing the mystery in everything that happens for a child of God.

What is the mystery when your roots are strongly attached to faith in God? Simply put? It’s Jesus!

Jesus creates amazing options you didn’t notice before you put your faith glasses on. As you trust and obey, you see Christ’s character forming in yourself, pushing through the soil of your life from your roots up. Your perspective changes along with the landscape as things grow. The mystery of God’s Son is forming in you. Treasures of His wisdom and knowledge are becoming your harvest. The root system under you is expanding powerfully into strength and support.

Think back to the day and circumstances when you received Jesus as your Savior. Bottom line, you realized you were a sinner and needed a Savior. You trusted Him for His incredible gift of salvation and forgiveness of sin. Simple faith. Done deal.

Simple faith made you a child of God. You became holy through Christ’s work on the cross. That’s a big thing growing up from a tiny seed of simple faith.

Here is a practical take-away. In the same, simple faith you believed for salvation, you live your daily life – over top of your root system. Simple faith feeds a healthy root system in every detail, in big issues, in looming unknowns, etc. God works all things together for your good as you love, trust, and obey Him. He keeps all His promises, holds you steady, gives wisdom, stays with you, and works miracles. Done deal.

God’s enemy – your enemy – uses anything he can to pull you away from this simple faith and obedience. Since he’s a trickster, deceiver, and liar – under his terrible influence, your root system will become unhealthy. Though they may sound reasonable, the enemy’s influences are hollow and deceptive.

I’m sure you’ve heard stories of people who died but came back to life. Some have been miraculously healed of serious diseases. There are stories of amazing financial provisions – down to the penny needed. Imminent tragedies have “somehow” dissipated. People have prayed for rain in drought and received it. These kinds of things are on the list of “Big Deal Miracles.” But most of us just need a regular miracle – something to encourage our hearts. I also think we get so focused on our own stuff that we miss the entire list of “Super Special Small Miracles” that happen each day. Do you need a miracle?

Everyone knows about amazing people – brilliant minds over centuries that have changed history. From people who developed electricity to combustible engines to medical discoveries. Some folks excel with physics laws, or as Olympians, some dare to travel in space, or introduce cutting-edge technology. Other amazing people create classic art, music, and literature. You might even know personally someone who has made significant impact on the world. Amazing people!

You, also, have impact on the world! So you are an amazing person.

But there’s another brilliant person in every way. He grabs people’s attention and is greatly respected. Jesus is that amazing Guy. If you really “get” who He is, you would agree He inspires awe and worship. His credentials and character create a kind of “wow” sensation.

Jesus often performed miracles. Because He is known to alter normal consequences, it’s also clear that Christ’s involvement at any level changes things. In a world where our lives sometimes feel like deserts – void of miracles – we need His touch.

What makes Jesus so amazing? We already mentioned His credentials and character. Often, Jesus’ character is presented as something to aim for and aspire to. However, our next narrative focuses more on Jesus’ credentials. He is extremely well-qualified for the positions He holds. 

People have wondered what God looks like. Since no one can see God, we have settled into ideas of His nature, appearance, and personhood. God wants to connect with people. So, He put Himself into a human baby body that grew into a man. God became Jesus – fully God, fully man – a Visible Image for human eyes, hearts, and minds.

Jesus is the Great Creator. Yes, it was His’ brilliant mind, creative heart, and strategic power that created all things. With just words, the Word created everything, even invisible powers. He spoke – it happened! (Jn. 1:1-4) He’s also the Extraordinary Strategist.

Jesus existed before all things – back into infinity. And He reaches forward into infinity. He holds all things together. Sustainer of All Things. So – if He were to withdraw His presence in the universe (if that were even possible) things would likely shrivel up and cease to be. Everything exists because of His power and grace, which He shares freely with His creation. With you.

Jesus is the Head of His Church – His Body. We are a part of this Body, each one unique and precious. “In Him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) He is the Groom, and we are the Bride. He intends to be intimately connected to you.

Jesus is the Supreme Leader. Since He is fully God, not lacking anything – power, knowledge, goodness, grace, etc. – we can know the invisible God through Him. What a privilege to personally know the Supreme Being, who made our peace possible through His own blood shed on the cross. Every incredible discovery and achievement has origins in Jesus, who leads in all  human goodness.

Jesus is the Reconciler. Because we were once alienated from God, Jesus makes you holy again, and connects you to the Father He graciously shares with you. If you put faith in Jesus, you can be a friend and child of the invisible God. The big if? . . . you need to decide if you will put your faith in Jesus and establish your hope through His gospel. Each individual must respond to Jesus. “The one who puts their hope in Him will never be put to shame.” (Rom. 10:11) So, what about you?

Indeed, Jesus is a picture of God, representing God’s heart to humanity. He helps us peek into God’s essence and observe His character. He is the Miracle Worker – an all-around-Amazing Guy! And if that’s not enough – Jesus wants to be your closest Friend. Because His extravagant greatness, beauty, wisdom, intelligence, and power are all made available to you every day in each detail – you have an extraordinary offer!

Accepting and living inside these amazing truths – well, the wonder of it makes Jesus a Stumbling Block. Many people just can’t accept all this is true – for them! Do you believe it? Have you accepted Christ’s credentials for your life? Or does “lack of faith” make Him a stumbling block to you?

There are 3 interesting components to a miracle.

Here is a list that helps you connect with the Miracle Worker, Jesus.

Prayer precedes a miracle. Express your need to the One who loves you. Come close to Jesus with your heart.

Many prayers are not answered because people don’t do their part. They sit and think: I’ll ask God for a miracle, and – tada! Actually, it looks more like this: Roll up your sleeves and participate in your miracle as God does what only He can do. Partner with Him.

Waiting is hard for most people. It feels like a “no” answer. But it’s not. Much of life is spent waiting for things, events, people, timing, etc. A lot happens in a “wait.” This place of pause is pregnant with God’s power.

It’s easy to get caught up in the desire for a miracle, the sensation of an intervention, the glitter of the extraordinary. You may not even recognize the miracle when it happens. Many miracles quietly slip by unrecognized. They don’t match your expectation.

Grab onto the miracle you prayed for! Don’t let it slip through your fingers. It is your special gift from the Lord even if it looks different than you anticipated. God doesn’t give shabbily. (Jas. 1:17) Everything He gives is much better than what you asked for . . . but the packaging is almost always unexpected. God doesn’t miss a thing. Open your packaging, tear off limiting wrappings, cut the strings. You will find an amazing gift inside, custom-designed for you.

If your miracle is asking for no more pain or difficulty in this life, perhaps you need to amend your request. Because pain and difficulty are part of this broken world, God gave a promise of hope. They will fall away when Jesus returns. Scripture says, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world.” (Jn. 16:33) So, this verse implies – simply trust Jesus will supply what you need. No strings attached.

Perhaps the Miracle Worker wants to give you more than what you immediately see. Ask for patience, courage, renewed strength, resolved faith, hope. Those are all miracles. God answers prayer. And God still performs miracles.

Why not be alert? Why not receive what God is eager to give?

I’ve been listening attentively to the news these recent months. Our world sounds weary. And since the globe is made up of individuals – like you and me – I’m guessing you may feel some weariness, too. In addition to managing weariness of your personal life, you likely feel some fall-out from all that’s going on globally. When you are weary, may you be encouraged by today’s content.

As we consider things happening in countries world-wide, it’s as if a gate of troubles has been opened. Individuals are caught up in it as world citizens. They still seek and value individual purpose and hope. But my guess is people also need renewal as we navigate these global times.

1 Chron. 29:15 says, “. . . Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.” That sounds discouraging. But isn’t it somewhat true? You think things might be turning a corner and getting better – and then the other shoe drops.

So, where is hope?

Let’s spend time with the need for hope in weary times – common to all people of all cultures.

You and I are not the first to ask questions about the state of the world. We’re not alone in our quest for hope and peace. People have asked questions for centuries. Listen to one man’s questions. “What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?” (Job 6:11).

That sounds dismal! Still, it reflects a common thread of human response during difficult global days. Even stout-hearted people wonder about enduring such times. Some may feel deep inner concern as they hear news updates. Some wonder if this stuff is our “new norm.” Others contemplate what it’s going to take to get back to normal. Wherever you are in response to difficult times, you can still have hope.

Scripture talks about the hope God gives His people. Here’s a wonderful verse from God’s Word!

Ps. 25:3 says, “No one who hopes in You will ever be put to shame.” This Scripture gives a clear directive and a solid promise. Think through this verse with 4 approaches:

When you feel shame:

Sometimes weariness just invades. It’s like a war against you. Remember, you have a very real enemy who is also God’s enemy. Good news! That puts you on the winning side.

But, like so many situations in life, weariness provides a great opportunity.

What if it seems you are down to the last dribble of hope? What can you do?

One man in the Bible has caught my attention. He suffered and had significant losses. So, we can identify with him when we become weary of life. But this man’s words grab me. They stabilize my perspective.  Here’s what he said, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” (Job 13:15)

I think that’s called “stubborn faith.” It is definitely resolve. It’s stomping your foot and saying – “I’m not changing my mind!” And it’s believing God’s claims even when you can’t see the results or when you don’t understand His process. Knowing God is loving and good, you can train and practice resilience and resolve.

When you get down to your last dribble, Gal. 6:9 re-sets perspective. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” At the proper time.

Did you know you have God’s permission to be appropriately stubborn to never give up? This is how Jesus lived His life on earth. He is our Model, Friend, and Trainer.

Weariness can result from normal “wear and tear” of living in this world. Even when things are not discombobulated like they are currently, wear and tear brings on weariness.

There is a kind of weariness that is only remedied by rest and renewal. If you are very tired from seasons of life, why not ask God to provide a season of rest? Deep rest comes from God. Let Him decide what that provision looks like.

Sometimes a person becomes weary at the high drain of just staying alive. God has strongly promised to give direction and provision as you turn to Him. He is aware of your needs – and you are more valuable than many sparrows. (Mt. 10:31)

Jesus prepared His disciples for the reality of how hard life can get. But He couched this heads-up with a promise – “In this world you will have troubles. But don’t be afraid, for I have overcome the world.” (Jn. 16:33)

God is always offering help and hope. He intends to walk with you and knows how to address every detail while sharing both your joys and sorrows. Since God made people, He knows how to help His weary children.

God wants “better things” for you. (Heb. 6:9) Better habits. Higher standards. Clearer goals. Careful plans. Passionate involvement. Renewed strength. Rest from weariness. He’s thought about all of this. If you focus on putting God’s interests above your own, even when you are down to a dribble, you will find He already has every interest of your life on His radar.

But “better things” also means “better trust.” Since your Father loves you and will take care of your interests, weary times provide your opportunity to make a powerful statement – that you love Him back. “Better things” come from “better faith” and “better obedience.” Even “better rest” flows from God’s kind and compassionate heart.

So, buckle up. There is hope when you are weary!

One of the first things you do when you walk into a room is turn the light on. That enables you to see everything, prevents falls, and helps you find your way. A light makes your environment feel more welcome. And it’s sure easier to find a misplaced item. However, here’s the question: if it’s easy to turn a light on in a room, why is it harder to turn the light on inside you?

Have you ever experienced lack of direction? I have. Unfortunately, it’s a hard thing to feel you are in the dark. Or, feeling you’re just standing still. Hours of hard work – with little to show for it. Patiently waiting feels anti-productive. Still, it is totally possible to turn the light on.

Jesus often refers to Himself as “The Light.” Essentially, He created the human design. And so, He knows our need for light in order to live healthy lives. Since He is the Light, it makes sense to know Jesus better. So, why not set daily time alone with Him to:

It helps to take Jesus into your day! That’s your partnership action step. Remarkably, God is already with you every hour, even in tomorrow. And, that’s His partnership promise. Consequently, your part and His part together makes your relationship increasingly precious.

The “lover of light” is not afraid to let light shine into their life, revealing what is there. Here’s are 7 reasons why:

Conclusively – when you lack direction, turn the light on by coming closer to Jesus by faith.

Christ claims He is the light of the world. Jn. 8:12 says, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

Notice these two critical concepts from that verse:

Those incredible statements promote hope!

Thankfully, God wants some things for you:

If there is no darkness of any kind in God, why do you remain at a distance from Him sometimes? Equally, why do you feel darkness strongly sometimes?

The cross of Jesus brought the light to you. That rough, wooden torture tool opened Heaven’s light to you. Even in this imperfect world, you can choose to live in God’s light. So – why the distance? It isn’t from God.

God’s light is safe, not scary. God loves and esteems you. As you remain in Christ, nothing can take away your peace, joy, and confidence if you stay in Him. Additionally, pleasing God gives satisfaction. So, you can also relax as He helps you determine direction. Even when He reveals things you need to change, that exposure fills you with hope. God wants you to succeed.

There are reasons a person may be in darkness even when they are committed to Jesus.

Why not invite God’s light into every corner of your life? Wake up to the warmth of His love and kindness, even in dark seasons. “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 Jn. 1:7) Let Jesus forgive, strengthen, encourage, and renew your inner soul, even before you get direction. It is likely your renewal is necessary before getting new direction.

There are some things you can do to partner with God and turn the light on – even as you wait for direction.

Pause and pray. Ask God for the following things:

Now pause and listen. Be open to new direction. Listen for anything new and fresh. Sometimes the discomfort of being unsure helps you find a new direction. Being open helps you see, hear, consider, and research things you may not have before.

Until you hear something new from the Lord, until He guides you in a different direction, until He brings people and circumstances into your life to alter your direction, “stay the course.” Keep doing what you have been. The temptation is to think waiting isn’t worthwhile. But it is a way you can say, “I love You back, Lord.”

Choose to believe God is already laying “track” ahead of your steps. He is directing in ways you can’t see.

Work to creatively keep developing as you wait. This investment of your personal growth increases your own resources – a library of practical ideas you can take forward with you when you get a new direction. This can build momentum. Don’t underestimate the value of your increasing experience.

Start a bullet list of things that were clear before. It renews you to remember how God led previously with fresh clarification of your life purpose and goals. He will do it again.

Sometimes God uses this simple re-evaluation process to reveal that His new direction requires only some “tweeks.”

Reflect over your life with cheer and hope. This perspective is a testimony of God’s faithfulness. And keep developing your skills and abilities.

You might be surprised to realize the very things you do by faith during this awkward season are forming a foundation under your next season. Resolve and courage form as you actively wait on God.

Someone once told me being a follower of Jesus is exclusive of behaviors, and it’s only about God’s love and their heart. “Behaviorism” is a term that was used. I’ve prayerfully and extensively thought about this perspective. God has blessed this pensive exploration with some interesting ideas. It has to do with “why don’t I change?”

If a person says life is only about God’s love and their heart – while they carve away behaviors and patterns from that model – some inaccurate assumptions have been made about God’s original design for humanity.

All the pieces – God’s love, a person’s heart, and behaviors – are woven together. They are solidly rooted in the reality of Who God is. The Scriptures couldn’t be more clear about God’s claims.

I’ve also concluded this misconception – it’s only about God’s love and your heart – is why some Jesus followers struggle with getting free from old, unhealthy habits to form new behavior patterns. And they ask  – “why don’t I change?”

Developing patterns and behaviors that please God from a heart of faith doesn’t negate God’s incredible, undeserved, fresh, faithful love! These are not opposing ideas. However, behaviors from a heart of faith accomplish some things:

Yes, all these amazing proofs of God’s love . . . simply from choosing certain behaviors and patterns because of faith.

So much gets confused and lumped into the “God’s-love-only” camp. Of course, God’s call to rise-up and live a righteous life surely starts in His love – at the cross. Scripture claims it’s because God first loved us that we can love God and others. His love is the only connect point back to His original design.

But let me suggest – love means a lot of hard work. It was certainly work for Jesus while He lived on earth. He accomplished more than any other man. And He did this through His behaviors.

God made people to function inside behavior choices – but from the heart. He insists doing the right thing has nothing to do with feelings, nor does it mean you must understand before you act. Original design means:

Again, these are proofs of God’s love. Many of God’s children assume His love is an entitlement. What an erroneous assumption! And it may be responsible for a great deal of failure in believer’s lives.

A person can’t be a believer without God’s love. The goal is to accept God’s love, to love Him back, and to love one another. However, love is a verb – an action, a behavior, a set of patterns. It’s what you do even when you don’t feel love. It is proof God dwells in your soul.

Mt. 25: 31-46 talks about goats and sheep God will separate one day based on what they “did and didn’t DO!” Actions matter.

You can’t just include everyone in God’s kingdom! Scripture doesn’t teach that. Jesus said – “I am the way, truth and life, NO ONE comes to the Father except through Me.” (Jn. 14:6) In other words, even though He loves every person as they are before they change, each person’s behaviors matter. To behave according to Scriptural principles proves you belong to Jesus. He also said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commands.” (Jn. 14:15) That involves behaviors.

I have come to think the success of our lives boils down to three key principles that flow from God’s love, are activated by free will, and affect behaviors – the original design.

Let’s look at each principle individually.

Motivation is the first principle that supports behaviors that pleases God. What motivates you? There are two top motivators that should empower every Jesus follower and result in behaviors.

What motivates your behaviors? Is it God’s love? Are you living with a grateful heart? If you are, you will start to change.

Power is the second principle that provides energy to live with behaviors of love and gratitude. Because living like Jesus goes against our fallen nature, power is needed in two ways to choose behaviors of Christ.

Are you tapping into Christ’s “power outside yourself?” Are you engaging the “power inside yourself?” If you are, you will start to change.

God purposed your design for His glory. Your value and uniqueness are secure for eternity. And God’s power activates your purpose. You can “be you” with no fear, with confidence, and with joy. You can be creative and free!

2. Your Life Purpose – Why not be the “you” God created by aligning your life details with God’s love, His commands, and His purposes? Why not help change the world?

If you slip into Original Design and engage your Life Purpose, you will start to change.

What about the messy, broken world? It definitely can interfere with good intentions and practicing godliness. However, your decisions are still “on you.”

Jesus gives practical answers. He said, “Do not fear. I have overcome the world.” (Jn. 16:33) You don’t have to be afraid!

Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13) You can do this!

The psalmist said, “Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” (Ps. 51: 6) You can partner with God from your inner, secret being!

Your free will is an incredible gift. If you align your behaviors with these truths by faith, you will start to change.

It’s challenging to be alive and active each day. Global situations bring concerns, fears, and insecurities. Losses and deep disappointments get in the way of living free. This world is writhing with threats against peace. Even so, you can discover the magic of being alive and active.

Sometimes we just wish we could have a bit of magic to change things. You know – wave the magic wand over circumstances to bring purpose, provision, joy, and peace. We long for the absence of threats, sorrows, disappointments, and losses. We get tired or sick. Then we sigh, because we know there is no such magic.

Or – maybe there is. Maybe there’s a kind of magic that helps us live each day – alive and active.

This magic is something C. S. Lewis brings into his children’s stories – greatly loved by children and grown-ups. Though he  doesn’t call it such, this magic is the lovely magic of God. You may not think of God’s work as magic because of how magic has become associated in the world. Perhaps you’re more comfortable with words like miracle or power.

Since it doesn’t take a magic wand, how do you connect with the lovely magic of God? How do you live inside His power and experience His miracles?

Changes are needed. Some things you change. Some things God changes. But you work together as a team.

He works + You work = Partner With God.

Here are 7 things you can do to experience the magic of being alive and active.

The first thing is simply come as you are. Imperfect, limited, weak, in need of help and a Savior. But also lovely, created with skills and abilities, made in God’s image, majestic. So, humble yourself and come as you are to God. He loves you. Remember the old gospel hymn, “Just as I am . . . I come.” (Charlotte Elliott)

The next thing is to change your perspective. What changes might be needed? The Scriptures are filled with helpful teaching points and action steps that train God’s children in godly perspective. That means spending time in God’s Word each day. The more God’s Word gets into you, the more your perspective matches His.

Before change can take hold and make a difference, you need to invite the new . . . and let go of the old. This means being open and receiving what God shows in your heart. It also means spending intentional time talking to God and listening to Him. He’s with you, ready to listen and teach. God cares about your thoughts and feelings. But the bigger question – do you care about what God thinks? Are you willing to receive His instruction?

Once you decide to change perspective and embrace new things God is teaching, His principles become habit – your new norm – your default. That means deliberately practicing them as you meditate on them night and day. (Ps. 1) People who embrace this change also embrace God’s thoughts. Is. 55:9 says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Are you embracing God’s truth and promises in your difficulties?

Believe. No matter what. Sometimes it gets really hard! But the more resolved you are to trust God, the easier it gets. In fact, you’ll get to a place where you say with absolute conviction – “I’m not changing my mind.” You might even stomp your foot. Do you believe God’s love and power? Do you believe His magic – His miracles for the human heart?

Go forward means doing what God brings to your attention even if its difficult or unwanted. Cheerful obedience pleases God. Be the person He created; fulfill your life purpose. Go forward and don’t turn back. God is good, loving, faithful, powerful – and He keeps His promises. Remember, you are a servant to God. But He also invites you to be His child.

After all these steps, you finally get to the miracles! It can happen faster than you think. One day, as you focus on training in God’s ways, you realize – that’s the miracle! But being alert and aware helps you find the magic.

Staying connected with God helps you –

God is alive and active. He overflows with qualities that make life meaningful, and He intends to share with you. God wants to bless your life daily with miracles.

Sadly, few have eyes to see His miracles, but they’re still real. Many miracles are so regular, people miss them. Too often, folks feel entitled to them. Some folks feel unworthy, so they don’t latch onto God’s blessings.

Do you see His magic – the tiny, daily blessings that remind – God is with you and loves you?

There’s a kind of magic in God sharing His character and blessings with you. He is the source of being alive and active.

If you read the gospels with any imagination, you notice Jesus was not only willing to be your sacrifice; He intentionally pursued the cross to make the miracle a reality. Christ’s amazing qualities climaxed into a merciful magic – for you.

Are you enjoying God’s ordinary miracles? Do you responded to His special, “above-and-beyond” kindness when He intervenes and answers prayers for you? Your greatest miracle is eternal life – being part of His royal family. It all feels like undeserved, merciful magic – at a high price Jesus paid. God loves you and sees the person He created you to be.

Are you enjoying being alive and active? Do you live with this knowledge each day? How long has it been since you took a deep breath and let God’s creation fill your soul? Have you listened to the birds’ songs lately? What about drinking in the beauty of each flower, bending to enjoy their scent. Do you pause to enjoy God’s presence even in your struggles? More magic!

You have people in your life who are gifts from God. Family and friends who need you. Chances are – you have food, water, clothing, and provisions others may not. Even if your health has been threatened, you likely have access to treatments and medical plans many don’t. Undeserved, merciful magic.

How long has it been since you sincerely thanked God? His miracles are all around you. If you have trusted Jesus, He lives inside you. His Word is your guidebook. So much magic of being alive and active – even when things don’t go the way you pictured!

Remember: for now, being alive and active means embracing God’s power and love in a broken world. 

Because you are the recipient of God’s good, undeserved magic, you can live inside miracles each day. You can know His power in your life. Why not make changes we mentioned to adopt practices and patterns of miracles. Let’s review:

Share God’s lovely magic with others who need hope. There is always someone who has less than you!

“Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let’s not be afraid to receive each day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.” (Henri Nouwen)

God always has a plan that includes the entire world. Without question, it also includes you! His big picture plan for the world and His individual plan for your life come together when we ask a question – “What’s in your hand?”

This material will engage some philosophy and a review of a bit of theology. However, I think it’s helpful for today’s content. And then, once we get through that, I have a sweet story to illustrate “what’s in your hand.”

This world is groaning, yearning for a better way to do things. Nations are battling for freedom – for their very soul. Creation is writhing under threats of climate change. In addition to all this, individuals are slipping through the cracks. All kinds of atrocities and tragedies are happening globally, daily. Consequently, people are going hungry, losing hope, perhaps being killed – even in your community.

The Scriptures tell us that before He created the world, God had a beautiful, perfect plan. Creation launched this strategic plan timeline forward. At this launch, God privileged mankind to be caretakers of creation and all its processes.

God also established something that would become critically important – forever. He knew mankind would fall. Equally, He knew His perfect creation would break under the strain of being forced out of its original design. So, before He created anything, God developed The Plan of Salvation. He put into motion a Redeemer: Jesus, the Intermediator – fully God, fully man. Subsequently, any person who believes on Jesus would rise back into original design.

Rev. 21:5 says, “He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” 

So, we can say God’s got a plan. It is in process and involves the big picture and your individual life. Regardless, how does all this philosophical background affect what’s in your hand? We’ll get there. Hang tight with me.

Let’s start here. God’s plan has a story line, plot, climax, and resolution (like a good book). Strategically, you are part of it.

First, a nutshell, point-by-point summary of God’s story plan goes like this –

When we face the reality of our ravaged world, nations, creation, individuals – knowing God has a plan is comforting. That is, IF you also believe He is good, loving, and wise, as Scripture teaches.

God’s intelligence is unmatched. His compassions never fail. His timing is impeccable. Every attribute of His character is noble, credible, and congruent with His very nature. Remarkably, all these words portray God’s person.

When you invest your individual trust in God’s plan by faith, you can rest. Living with trust and rest in God means comfort even in troubled times. Still – everybody’s got a part in this story – both God and you.

Let’s look at some comforting, powerful facts about God as He works His plan:

You may wonder – what does all this have to do with – “what’s in your hand?” I promise – it’s coming.

God works through properties He created: time, space, physics, chemistry, etc. Equally, He also works miracles – even today – that often look different than you picture. Additionally, His sustaining power pulsates all around you and throughout the world. Conclusively, He will restore a perfect creation.

This is the big picture plan.

God’s heart is also leaning toward you because He loves you! Since He’s an excellent intermediator and negotiator on your behalf, He secured your salvation and eternal life. God cares about you down to your life details, personality, and skill sets.

This is the individual plan.

God is utterly faithful. Scripture says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Deut. 31:6) God is brilliant and can do anything. There is no one like Him. (Ex. 8:10; 1 Sam. 2:2; 2 Sam. 7:22; 2 Chron. 14:11)

You have an important role in God’s plan. Now we’re getting closer to “what’s in your hand.”

Here are some points to explore in connecting with God:

Here is the story I promised. It’s about an ordinary individual! A person like you and me.

When I was a little kid, 9 or 10, sitting in church in a small town, a farmer got up front and shared what was on his mind. I sat in my pew, kicking my legs, chewing gum, and pondering his story. In his every-day world, he drove a grain truck, a combine, tended to chickens and cows, shoveled “stuff” in the farm yard, fixed machinery. Yet, he wanted to be part of God’s plan. So, he asked God questions. And he got unusual answers.

This man asked God what he could do to help a broken world – people who are lost, poverty, shattered nations. Similar to Job, he got a question back rather than an answer – “What’s in your hand?”

A bit surprised, the farmer thought. “Hmmm, what is in my hand? A hammer, a wrench, a shovel. What does this have to do with God’s plan?” For decades, the farmer had simply worked his land and cared for his family and community.

Well, one year, our church burned down. He joined a group of men to use hammers, wrenches, and shovels to build a new church. This one tragic event brought two groups of Jesus followers together into one stronger group.

Still asking God questions years after the church was rebuilt, he took a missions trip to Haiti. There he swung a hammer, cranked on a wrench, dug with his shovel.

Over the years, that farmer accomplished more than he imagined. Besides impacting his family and community with his hard work on the farm, he served a culture in Haiti. And he never knew how his story impacted a little girl in a pew.

You see, my dad was the pastor of that little church that burned down. He often worked with farmers in their fields. And he worked side by side with farmers and town folks – swinging hammers, cranking wrenches, digging with shovels as they re-built the church together.

As events played out, my father was on that same missions trip to Haiti with the farmer. His heart was so moved, he gave himself to full time missions for the rest of his life.

When we moved, that same farmer and his brother loaded up a big farm truck and helped move my family to Dad’s new ministry. Once again – applying his hands to what was in front of him.

The farmer and his wife also supported my family financially for many years with proceeds from their farm where he continued to swing a hammer, crank on a wrench, and dig with his shovel.

Because of all this, the farmer made a mark on the world by simply using what was in his hand. His portion in God’s plan quietly spread in waves around the globe, making a difference. The girl in the pew was listening and watching.

You might be in business. Perhaps a homemaker with young children. Maybe you are an engineer, a medical professional, teacher, musician, carpenter, student. You might be a farmer.

Ask God your questions! But let Him answer with His questions. As you discover what’s in your hand, simply live each day. Draw close in your heart by faith to God. He loves and wants you.

Today’s content is an inspiring, modern-day testimony of ordinary folks like you and me. It shows that responses to disappointments and unknowns in life can be a true story of faith. While struggling to find good answers, hoping for best outcomes, accepting developments that alter one’s path – faith still matters and steadies your steps.

Before we get into the story, let’s remember –

He fell in love with her in their youth. They both knew the Lord and had given their lives to Him. So, they hoped for a good life as they began to build together.

He was a capable, smart guy. Strong, good-looking – a farmer with a huge enterprise. A “can-do” kind of fella. Hard-worker, planner, strategist. Social, supportive and kind, providing help when needed. God had given him wisdom to provide for his family as their kids were growing up. Being a farmer, he knew dependence on God for many acres entrusted to him. He also knew long hours working the land. Trusting the Lord for weather patterns and the miracle every seed needs, this young farmer proved through the decades of his life – God is faithful.

She was the kind of woman you just want to be around – and beautiful! Positive, super kind, ready for adventure. She was strong, capable, flexible, and supportive to him. Creative and pleasant. And what a mom! Her kids had it good. So did other women in their community – because she was a gifted Bible teacher, encouraging and training women in Scripture for many years. She trusted the Lord for mentoring lives in her family and her ministry. Through the decades of her life, she proved – God is faithful.

Together, he and she built something, even in hard times. They chose Jesus as their foundation. On this Rock – they erected a sturdy framework for the challenges and joys of daily living – together.

As he worked the land, she supported. As she tended the family, he supported. When he helped others in need, she smiled and blessed him. When she studied and then taught groups of women hungry for God’s Word, he knew she was in her element.

Their children grew up with many of his and her qualities (observed and copied, I suppose): strength, perseverance, creativity, kindness, hope. In this way, their kids multiplied the harvest of their parent’s lives.

That was their start. Sounds like a good one, don’t you think? But life is hard. He and she both had their troubles. Difficulties and obstacles. Disappointments and discouragements. Yet, they had The Lord Of The Harvest (him) – The Best Bible Teacher (her), and God’s Love and Presence (together).

So, seeds of faith sprouted and grew sturdy in the soil of their lives. During storms of life, he and she guarded young shoots of faith God was growing.

Sometimes gentle rains brought a rainbow. Many days radiated the warmth of the Son nurturing faith in God. But winters and storms were hard. Bitter, sometimes – lasting far too long. Still, the hope of spring came in season.

Seeds fell on good life soil and produced a crop a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. (Mt. 13:8) They were building for God – together.

The day came when she was diagnosed with diabetes and kidney failure. This news pierced their hearts as ramifications fully landed. Everything would change for both of them. They would be planting a new field together in unbroken soil they’d never worked before. However, as you’ve already learned, they had developed skills they would need.

This new faith planting was one of suffering for both him and her – one to display God’s glory. (Is. 61:3)

She would know discomfort and pain she’d never known before. Fragility would ravage her body though she was otherwise healthy. Suddenly, limits would become boundaries of what she could and could not do. Things in her normal day would shift. Three times a week, she would travel from their lovely farm to a city hospital for dialysis – just to stay alive. Her faith stretched in a season of growth that few know about.

He would know the sorrow of watching her suffer. His strength could no longer intervene. Only his faithfulness, kindness, and love could provide comfort. And to this new plow, he put his hand. Life changed drastically for this farmer who knew hard, long days on the land and equipment.  This new season was like throwing an anchor out of a speed boat, yet it was still packed! Very much like Jesus would, he drove her three times a week for treatment.

He and she were tested beyond what they ever dreamed. Hopes of healing took on a new look. Though they were on the list, the wait for a kidney donation was years out.

Both had aged well. Handsome and beautiful still. Both radiated the strength of God’s planting even in trials. Their hearts were ripened from seeds of suffering life had planted in their personal fields . . . and they were ready for harvest.

In the years they would finally have had time to do things together with the kids raised, they found themselves tied to a disability. How disappointing – locked into not knowing if or when she’d rise on the list before aging indicated a kidney transplant wouldn’t be recommended.

She saw the overwhelming challenge for the rest of her life – and rose to it with tenacious faith. One day, she explained how three times a week, medical staff hooks her up to lines and machines that take out every drop of her body’s blood to filter it – and then pump it back in. This cleansing gives strength for 2 more days when the process is repeated.

She also joyfully described opportunities to share her faith in Jesus to other dialysis patients. A beautiful testimony through a planting she didn’t want. The resolve to maintain a lovely, positive, energetic perspective of faith in God gave her a platform to proclaim – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!” (Heb.13:8)

Everything else remains “unknown.”

He noticed a sadness in his soul as he walked the new field they were planting. A “hard-times” soil. This farmer had worked rich, fertile land and commanded the earth to cooperate under God’s original design. Gen. 1:29-30 says it like this – “God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth . . . I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so.” This man was a successful master over many acres God had entrusted to his care.

One day, he described – “Dialysis is today. Yes, I know my schedule for the next “X” amount of months and “X” amount of years … only the Lord knows how long. This is the responsibility He has given me to do, and I must carry out that task. I do feel His presence and strength during this time . . . sometimes I am mentally exhausted, but my strength is refreshed by the Lord when I need it.”

Everything else remains “unknown.”

I see Christ in these two people. A suffering servant in her – willing to do Father’s Will no matter what, with no understanding or guarantees. She still teaches women’s classes on her “between dialysis days.”

I see a compassionate servant in him – willing to serve his bride like Christ serves His Bride, in a field of suffering. He fills the waiting time on dialysis days by connecting with others and engaging productive resources.

Have you noticed people don’t easily trust these days? On the other hand, I’ve noticed sometimes people trust too quickly or naively. Interestingly, there are times, if we are deep-down honest, we can’t even fully trust ourselves. Essentially, we know our perspective may be skewed, our character isn’t always noble, and our judgment can be flawed. So, who can you trust these days, especially with increasing global uncertainty?

I’m thinking of business dealings, community decisions, family issues, friendships, news reports, career pursuits, nations interactions. Since credibility is often in question, how is trust nurtured?

Over the centuries, we have learned to use outside “go-to” sources, third party opinions, and established trustworthy references to weigh-in on life issues. Essentially, it’s like using gold to guarantee paper money. People pick the most reliable source they can find, and that becomes their point of reference. Consequently, they may become so convinced in these sources, they even swear by them.

Generally, however, people have learned to not trust readily. And the all-too-common “breach of trust” keeps destroying what little trust remains. So, we’re back to that question – who can you trust these days?

Did you know God, also, doesn’t trust others. You, me, people in general. So, is that good news or not?

I believe it’s good news. Thank Heavens, God does trust someone – Himself. He is always reliable, credible, and thinks clearly. Equally, He never makes a mistake, never lets you down, always pays attention, and deeply loves – no matter what you do. God provides for creation (which includes people). Thankfully, He is aware of world catastrophes. You may sometimes wonder about His involvement, but that doesn’t mean He is aloof or unaware.

There has to be someone greater/better than you and me to put trust in. God is that Person. Consequently, you can trust Him completely because He is trust worthy! And, you can trust Him even though you do not understand or can’t define Him.

What a relief! God’s trust is soundly placed in Himself and His Word, instead of in you and me. Essentially, that eliminates the risks of the unknowns. Also, it means He is that third party, reliable, reference point that validates reality even as He holds all things together, despite the often poor choices people make.

God wants to share His trustworthy love with you. Remarkably, with consistent, faithful character – and deep, abiding love – He keeps His Word always. As the objective, “go-to” guarantor, God validates your life.

Did you know trusting God equals freedom? Faith in a worthy guarantor frees your heart from worry, fear, hopelessness, and more. So, the real questions are:

You can be free and at peace even in this world of heartache, disappointment, and bondage. God loves you with everlasting love. (Jer. 31:3) Jesus’ work on the cross enables you to be connected to Him. Jesus is safe.

God uses Himself as guarantor of His promises. Essentially, He swears by Himself! Therefore, His children will be provided for – whatever it takes.

In keeping His promise, Jesus gave His life as a sacrifice to cover all debts against His heirs and to provide eternal care for His children. God physically carried out every detail to guarantee His promise through two unchangeable things:

Heb. 6:17 reminds, “Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed it with an oath.”

So, not only can you count on the life work of Jesus and His cross. You also have His Word (Scripture). AND you have His Oath (Guarantee).

It’s the oath. God is the only One who can be fully trusted as a worthy third party. Let’s explore another Scripture. Heb. 6:13-20 is a longer passage that helps unpack this idea. God is worthy of trust.

“When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for Him to swear by, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.’ And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

God became a person in Jesus Christ. Fully God – fully human. Jesus was born, grew up, showed God’s love daily, then carried out the guarantee of God’s promise of eternal life by sacrificing His life. Born to be sacrificed. Born to pay the price for sin. What a blow for a baby! Yet, for the Son of God, what a joy set before Him. (recorded in Heb. 12:2)

After Jesus died, He ran ahead of you into the Holy of Holies in the invisible realm. He, a Man, ran into the very presence of God. Unthinkable for a human to enter the Most Holy Place, stand before Holy God, and live to tell about it. But Jesus did just that.

Jesus kept God’s Word in every aspect without sin. Subsequently, He fulfilled God’s oath and makes it possible for you to enter the Most Holy Place – and live to tell about it! In fact, His plan is that you live in His presence even as He lives inside you. 1 Cor. 3:16 says, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” You have become God’s Most Holy Place.

Jesus invites you. Follow Him into this Most Holy Place for intimate relationship with God. His life was sacrificed to spare yours. Since Jesus suffered separation from His Father, you never have to be separated from God. It’s guaranteed by His Word and His Oath. If you can’t trust this, who can you trust these days?

Jesus restored HOPE. It is firm and secure. Run to this hope and grab onto it as you would grab onto the horns of the altar in the Most Holy Place. You can even swear by it. The altar is the place where you:

You won’t find a better offer of hope anywhere.

Be encouraged. Jesus personally guarantees all provisions you need through His Word and His Oath. You can boldly enter the throne room of Holy God. Why not respond to His deep love for you? Why not “come near to God and He will come near to you?” (Jas. 4:8)

Jn. 6:29 clearly says, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” Your work is to believe in Jesus, the Baby.

There are two concepts people all over the world cling to: Faith and Family. These ideas mean different things to each person. Yet they are a bedrock for people of any culture. Because the ideas of Faith and Family are interwoven, it all starts in the heart of God.

There are two basic ideas under faith and family. Let’s start with them.

1. “Belonging” is one of the greatest human needs God created. To meet this need, He created family. Belonging is part of His original design – a key for every person: single, married, divorced, adult, child, prodigal, famous, not-so-famous, royalty, ordinary, rich, poor. “God sets the lonely in families.” (Ps. 68:6) 

2. “Belief” is another part of God’s original design and is deeply rooted in each individual. God created humanity to function by faith. Subsequently, this goes beyond intellect, feelings, discovery, and perception. Belief is a dare to jump into open skies of God’s grace and mysteries – like a paratrooper (See Faith Jump).

So there you have it. God designed humanity for both faith and family.

We’ve said God created faith and family. However, let’s look at first things first.

What if you are a person who has struggled deeply with faith? Perhaps doubts have plagued your faith decisions.

What if you don’t enjoy the blessing of a family? Maybe you have a dysfunctional family. Death may have robbed you. Sadly, some cultures have a label for non-compliant individuals: outcast.

In this broken world, “first things first” means this: God made you for Himself. He loves you deeply. You have eternal value simply because He says so. No matter how you’ve struggled with faith, no matter what your family losses – God’s love for you is forever!

And there’s more. God not only forgives and provides a way to live forever. He gave an invitation into His family. This takes a step of faith.

People around the world have an interest in Royal Families of various countries. I suppose it’s a blending of history and current culture of that country. Because there’s such an interest in the strength, glory, and finery of royals, it’s a nod to the kind of lives all people were created to have. Guess what! This is also a nod to our future in Heaven.

Since it’s impossible for fallen people to connect with holy God, He sent Jesus to be our Brother and to set things right at His cross. 1 Jn. 3:1 calls anyone who believes on Jesus “children of God.” Ps. 68:5 says God is a “Father to the fatherless and a Defender of widows . . . “ Those Scriptures (and many more) address “belonging.” 

Heb. 12:2 says, ” . . . fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith.” That addresses “belief.” It was so important that Jesus went first and did it perfectly.

So, if you have faith in Jesus, He is your Brother. You also share His Father – your dad – a King! This is where the blend of faith and family nests in God’s heart. It’s not an accident God uses family terms.

You may not have a family. Perhaps you have an unhealthy family. However, if you’ve trusted Jesus for salvation, you are part of God’s Royal Family by faith – with perks and privileges as God’s heir. You also have royal responsibilities and influence. Let’s look at these 4 concepts.

As a member of God’s Royal Family, here are some of your perks and privileges:

Being in God’s Royal Family means you join Jesus in His responsibilities and influence. Here’s what He does – and how you can follow His example each day.

Christ holds all things together – including your life, His royal family, and all things of faith .

1 Pet. 2:5 says you are a “living stone” in the house of God’s royal family. You could say – “you are the house” joined with believers all over the world. It’s a “living house.”

As a “living stone,” you have blueprint plans and design diagrams given to you in God’s Word. As you train in His principles, God transforms you. So, He works. You work. It’s a partnership.

Let’s drill down into God’s ingenious plan. When the time was right, He slipped into the human race in a manger one dark night. The God-Man: Jesus. Very much like a super hero. But also very regular – like you and me.

The Lamb slain from the creation of the world, came to meet the needs of belief and belonging through faith and family. (Rev. 13:8)

Why would He do that?

Well – you needed a family. You also needed an Anchor for this challenging life – a strong faith in a strong God. This plan was put into motion when a baby was born – into a family!

How did we say it before? God loves you deeply. You have value because He says so.

So, we have a human Savior who carried out God’s plan through the cross . . . and then did something so rich. Jesus totally stood up for you before God the Father. Here’s how that happened:

Jesus entered the real temple in the invisible realm. He walked into the inner sanctuary, went right up to the altar boldly. Like the high priests of the Old Testament, He was carrying a blood sacrifice – His own life blood – the traditional sacrifice for God’s people. The blood of a perfect Lamb (capital “L”) was offered on the holy, sacred altar.

In essence, Jesus was saying, “Father – it is finished! This takes care of the sin problem. I paid the ransom for My brothers and sisters. As a result, please cancel the debt against them. Our children are free again to come back into faith and our family. This was a productive day! Consequently, each one who believes on Me for forgiveness and eternal life – cover them with My blood. Make them holy.”

No matter who you are or what you’ve done, Jesus is not ashamed to be identified with you. He will remain human forever as Emmanuel – “God With Us.” Remember that when you feel lonely.

When you engage faith in God and take your place in His family, good things happen:

God really wants you in His family. He really wants you to live by faith.
