As a clinical social worker who has been part of the healthcare system for many years, I’ve recognized the valuable influence animals have on my clients lives. I’ve also benefited from having animals as part of my family since I was young. When clients come to me for therapy after the loss of a pet they often feel shame after being told "it’s only a pet" or they feel guilty because this loss impacts them as much or more than the loss of a human loved one.

When I began my community service project as part of the veterinary and social work program I read everything I could find on the importance of the human-animal relationship. One book that was helpful was called 'Animal Assisted Therapy And Activities' by Phil Arkow. It’s an amazing resource guide for the use of animals in animal assisted interventions. This also helped me as a volunteer for the touch therapy program that I was involved in with my golden retriever for many years.

I am honored to have Phil Arkow join me on this episode so he can enlighten us about the work he has done in the field and the many projects that help to educate professionals on the importance on the human animal connection.

Over the years as I’ve raised, trained and competed in sports with my dogs. I’ve learned lessons, some the hard way. At the same time there’s been growing research in the field of canine rehabilitation in sports medicine. I attended training, lectures and then had to reach out to veterinarian specialist when my dogs had injuries. Some were sports related, others had injuries just chasing squirrels in the backyard.

I had the privilege to attend one of Dr. Zink's seminars called Coaching The Canine Athlete. I then reached out to Dr. Zink about my dogs recent injury, then followed up with an evaluation and treatment plan to help her heal. This whole process of rehabilitation and learning about activities to help my dogs get into better condition created not only a bond with my dogs, but increased their quality of life.

I am honored to be able to speak with this episodes guest Dr. Chris Zink, who is one of the primary specialists who has helped my dogs over the years.

The phrase "Hollywood has run out of ideas" has been used a lot over the last few decades by movie fans. With studios cranking out lackluster sequels, prequels, re-imaginings, reboots and remakes, it's no wonder cinema goers have become jaded.
