I'm late to the game, but I have loved watching this cultural moment unfold. For the chronically online, we saw quite the outrage from many, calling NFL player Harrison Butker a misogynist, a white suprem@cist, calling his speech hateful, calling for his cancellation and firing by the league, for the terrible offence of... adoring his wife, acknowledging the sacrifice she has made by choosing to be a "homemaker", taking care of their children and propelling him to be successful in his work. Speaking at a Catholic college's commencement, Butker, a proud Catholic man, said, while many of the grads would be excited to go out into the world, he would guess that they will be more excited to one day become wives and mothers (and husbands and fathers too). He calls this living out their vocation. Feminist Christians, mostly single and female, cried and screamed as well, saying he was devaluing their singledom and childless-status, and as "one of these" (not a feminist, to be clear), I weigh in on the insecurities that were clearly exposed and the practice we need to make of trusting in God and not some guy on the internet for our assurance and our peace.
