It’s the NFC West preview and four gangs are battling it out for control of this turf. We’ve got multiple contenders, players moving in-division this offseason, returning heroes hoping to avoid injury and older vets hoping for one last bite at the apple.

The 49ers are suffering from the injury bug already in their WR room but will hope with a long-term deal in place for Purdy, CMC returning from injury and Robert Salah back in town to handle their defence they can contend for the Lombardi this year. Will the fall off in their defensive talent hold them back? Will Purdy show himself worthy of his big contract? Will CMCs legs be able to hold up this year? A lot of potential, but a lot of pitfalls as well.

The Cardinals have added a lot of defensive talent (Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson etc.) to maybe finally shore up that side of the ball, but an underwhelming rookie season from Marvin Harrisson Jr leaves question marks at the wide receiver position. Yes, Trey McBride is a stud TE, but will depth at pass catcher and an aging running back room hold them back?

The Rams have a fantastic team on paper, at least on offence. Stafford throwing to Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, with Williams leading the backfield sounds like you’re onto a winner. But Stafford is still nursing a back injury, Adams is a year older, and their O-Line is not a strength. Can old man Stafford hold up to punishment? Their defence is strong up front with Verse and Turner, but the defensive backfield is lacking. Can the high-powered offence keep them ahead when it looks like teams may be able to go deep against them with ease? Better hope that pass rush gets home!

The Seahawks have a new look. Sam Darnold leading a Klint Kubiak offence. Strong running game, improved line (hopefully), a very exciting young defence that hits hard and can create turnovers (stop me if this is sounding familiar to any seahawks from the late 2000s/early 2010s). There is a lot to be excited about here, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, but can Darnold maintain his midseason form from last season and avoid the late season collapse again? Is Cooper Kupp (just moved over from divisional rival LA Rams) going to contribute or is he washed? Have all the changes on the line done enough to protect a QB that has previously been caught seeing ghosts?

What can we say about the NFC South? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by Baker Mayfield, have won this down on it’s luck grouping for the last 4 years straight. Their approach this year could be best summed up as, that worked before, lets try it again. Similar roster construction, gone is the OC Liam Coen, in is John Gizzard, but do they have the personnel and coaching to challenge for more than just a playoff berth?

The Falcons are hoping everyone else finds their Pennix as impressive as they do, with him taking over from Kirk Cousins and a bunch of new rookies on the defensive side of the ball (now under DC Jeff Ulbrich) hoping to give them a spark that has been sorely missing, particularly when it comes to pass rushing.

The Panthers seemed to find a spark late last season with Bryce Young starting to look like a potential franchise QB, they’ve gotten him a WR1 in Tet McMillan and are hoping to find some more bright points on offence with a slew of new faces. However, the defence which was the worst in the NFL last year, has a mountain to climb if they are to stay competitive this season.

And the Saint, good lord! Do you believe in Spencer Rattler? Could I interest you in some Tyler Shough? The season does not bode well for a team that is cash strapped, has no clear starting QB, just had Tyrann Mathieu retire and is trying to turn over what might be the shallowest roster in the NFL. Can their new brain trust of Kellen Moore, Doug Nussmeier, and Brandon Staley salvage something from what looks to be unsalvageable?

This week we turn our attention to the AFC North, a tough-nosed hard hitting slobber knocker of a division. The Ravens have won the last two years, the Bengals the two years before that. The Steelers haven’t won the division since Big Ben was with the team in 2020 (And the browns have never won it!). Who could take it this year?

The Bengals are struggling to sign their first round rookie Shemar Stewart, but have paid both Chase and Higgins, have Burrow, and are working to reach terms with Hendrickson. The defence has a new DC in Al Golden, but not a huge turnover of a sub-par roster so the offence will need to lead out if they are to be contenders this season. Can they avoid the slow start of other years that have often left them chasing their tails in the division race?

The Ravens have Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry as the faces of an offence that sports good young receivers, some safe old hand like Andrews, and a solid offensive line. Their defence will need to keep up their consistent pass rush to get back to their heights from 2023 but still have talent on that side of the ball (albeit getting a little longer in the tooth). Will Henry have one more season left in the tank and help Lamar to ring them to the promised land? Its Superbowl or bust at this stage right?

The Steelers haven’t had a franchise passer since Big Ben, and are hoping that the aged body of Aaron Rodgers can lead them to postseason success. While he’s been a lightning rod for controversy and underwhelming results in recent years, will he deliver in what he has said himself is likely his last season in the NFL? They’ve added DK Metcalf to help him on the outside, Kaleb Johnson to push Jaylen Warren in the RB room and a solid, if not overwhelming offensive line. The defence has been their calling card for years and still packs a bunch of blue chip talent, but that group is aging. Can aging vets like Darius Slay contribute, or possibly rookies like Harmon or Black step up? It’s a long shot, but Rodgers was once known for his Hail Marys, could this be his greatest one?

The Browns, an often overlooked little brother of this division, have decided to go from having one QB that is a problem, to having 4 QBs and that’s the problem. Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett represent the “safe veteran” options, Dillion Gabriel and Shedeur “vroom vroom” Sanders are the upstart rookies. They have Jerome Ford and bunch of rookie RBs, a WR room led by Jerry Jeudy, and a middling to poor offensive line. The defence has Miles Garrett paired up with rookie Maason Graham…. And Denzel Ward? There is not a tonne to love on paper here, but all they need is one of the rookies to step up and the outlook changes drastically. It will be nice to be able to cheer them on again following the Watson debacle, but is there any chance of that cheering happening into late January?

The offseason previews have finally arrived and we’re kicking off with the AFC East.

This division has been the Bill’s for the last 5 years but is there any chance of that changing? They’ve locked up Josh Allen on an updated long-term deal, picked up the customary aged pash rusher and brought in rookies to bolster the defensive backfield. Their eyes are firmly on Superbowl or bust, but have they done enough?

The Dolphins are bringing back a broadly similar group of players from recent years, Achane sits atop the running back chart, Hill has apparently found religion and their first round rookie might help solidify the defensive line. But has the speed kills offence been figured out, poor recent performances would point to it not being a runner for post-season football. Will it click this year or are we looking at the end of McDaniel’s tenure in Miami?

The Jets are getting out from underneath an Aaron Rodgers shaped boulder slowly but surely. They got the new head coach – check, they got the new quarterback – check, they are “changing the culture” – check, but how much can it turn around in a single year? There are blue chip players on this roster (Hall, Wilson, Williams), ex stars who have waned from early heights but have potential if motivated (Gardiner), could the Jets manage a single year swing from 5 wins to the playoffs?

The Patriots have found the heir to the Brady throne in Drake Maye. They have brought in a Belichick disciple in Mike Vrabel to coach him. They spent the offseason bringing in linemen to build protection for him, veteran receivers to help build out the passing game (albeit ones with some boat issues), rookies at RB and WR to build it out. All in all, a solid offseason, noting too splashy, but solid. Given how tumultuous the rest of the division is outside of the Bills, could this be a quick return to competitive football. While the moves sound boring, this coach built the most boring perennial playoff team in the Tennessee Titans previously, why cant Boston get some of that hot mid-tier also ran action?
