Miriam was the first Bible woman named as a prophet. Being a prophet meant God spoke directly to her and through her. Because she was already called a prophetess when the Hebrews made their way out of Egypt, we can assume she’d been leading other women for quite some time. Miriam was the first women’s ministry director and even had her own women’s praise team.

During a time of famine in Samaria, the Syrians besieged Samaria, causing acute inflation and desperation within the city walls. With the Syrian army surrounding the capitol city, they were unable to get provisions to the people inside. It got to the point that a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a fourth of a kab of dove droppings sold for five shekels of silver.

The Syrian army periodically raided Israel. They brought back captives including a young girl who was taken into the household of Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria. She was assigned to serve Naaman’s wife. 

Though Naaman was a mighty and honorable man, he had leprosy. The young servant girl felt compassion for his suffering and told his wife that there was a prophet in Samaria who could heal him of his leprosy.

After years of barrenness, God blessed the Shunammite woman with a son. But one day while the son was out in the field with his father, he developed a terrible headache. The father had a servant carry the boy to his mother. He died in her arms later that day.
