The Importance of Clinging to the Sunnah, a live telelink with Shaykh Ḥasan al-Bannā (raḥimahullāh), at the Cardiff Salafi Conference 2016, translated into English. A short, heartfelt admonition that holding to the Book and the Sunnah is an individual obligation and the life of the heart.
• Allah said, "O you who believe, respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life, and know that Allah comes between a man and his heart, and to Him you will be gathered" (al-Anfāl 24); the believers, with knowledge and faith, are the leaders of the Ummah.
• The life of the heart is the life of the person, the family and the Ummah, and nothing gives it life except the Book of Allah and the Sunnah, "the truest speech is the Book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muḥammad ﷺ".
• The Prophet ﷺ said there is a piece of flesh which, if sound, the whole body is sound, and if corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and that is the heart; the hearts of the servants are between two fingers of the Most Merciful, who turns them as He wills.
• Allah bore witness to His oneness along with the angels and those of knowledge (Āl ʿImrān 18), and the Prophets left behind no dirham or dīnār but knowledge, so whoever takes it has taken a great share; the scholars are the heirs of the Prophets.
• If someone calls you a "Wahhābī", say you follow the Book and the Sunnah and the Prophet ﷺ, taking knowledge from more than one scholar, each strong in a field such as tafsīr, ḥadīth or tawḥīd, all united upon the foundations of Ahl as-Sunnah.
• Faith is belief in the heart, speech on the tongue and action with the limbs, increasing with obedience and decreasing with sin, so wanting to be a believer is not enough without taking its means: sitting with the scholars and students, reading and acting.
• "Whoever lives among you will see much differing, so hold to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, bite onto it with your molar teeth, and beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is misguidance"; the Sunnah is the Prophet's sayings, actions and tacit approvals.
• The Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all in the Fire except one, those upon what the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions were upon, and whoever claims the Sunnah without acting upon it is not from its people.
• In every generation trustworthy carriers of this knowledge remove from it the distortions of the extremists, the false claims of the liars and the interpretations of the ignorant, such as changing "istawā" to "istawlā" or saying Allah's hand means His power, while the ḥadīth of charity says Allah takes it in His right hand and nurtures it.
• "If they believe as you have believed, they are guided" (al-Baqarah 137), and "Do not dispute, lest you lose courage and your strength depart" (al-Anfāl 46); the Ummah split because it left the way of the Companions.
• The Book and the Sunnah cover every part of life: kindness to parents, eating, sleeping, dealing with people, raising children, neighbours, entering the toilet and the home, and hearing and obeying the ruler even if he is an Abyssinian slave, and "Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire" is only achieved through them.
• He advises Muslims in Europe and America to learn with proper manners in the lessons, love the scholars and students, build an organised community life with marriage and the mosque, raise their children at home, and live out the religion so that people come to love Islām.
