Everyone is looking for unconditional love but yet have a list of conditions.  I can’t marry or date a person unless they make this, look this way, dress like this, or have these qualities.  We hear it all the time.  How can you expect unconditional love with a laundry list of conditions?  The very same when it comes to expectations.  Many people expect so much from their spouse…I mean even qualities or things they don’t possess themselves. People say all the time-I can’t expect me from you! 

Matthew 7:2 NLT-For you will be treated as you treat others.  The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.     

• Expectations: what you desire to happen or want to happen 
• Standards: level of quality and behaviors you will accept or demand

In today’s society, it’s important to understand relationships have many layers of makeup.  Because of those many layers, which include: family, children, work, friends, personal goals, etc... it is very easy for partners to get COMFORTABLE in a relationship! 

Ephesians 4:2 – Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”

So when I think of today’s topic: Baggage…I think of the song “bag lady” by Erykah Badu and the image comes to my mind of one person having their hands so full with all this baggage (maybe that’s unforgiveness, hate, resentment, unresolved emotional issues, past hurts, negative experiences, disloyalty, or childhood trauma) that you are carrying all this stuff, it is weighing you down and because it’s so much, you don’t have a free hand to receive the person that is designed for you because your hands are full of baggage from your previous relationships.  

Philippians 3:13 - No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead...".
