“Luke alone is with me” (2 Timothy 4:11). Together with his closing requests to Timothy for his cloak, his books and parchments, and the company of Mark, Paul’s strange remark about Luke seems like something that modern readers can write off as a vestige of the actual historic situation. However, it’s important to remember that this has been enscriptured. It has been inspired by and preserved by the Holy Spirit for us today. So what if it’s a picture of something more? What if it’s a picture — in some of the last words of Paul in the New Testament — of the New Testament itself coming together: the Word of God in the writings of Paul coming together beyond the life of Paul?

We look at the story of the rich man, who (so he says!) obeyed the Law perfectly, but couldn’t give up his riches to follow Jesus. One thing he lacked, Jesus tells us. What was it? Is this really a story about the evil of money and people with money, or does it strike more universally at the heart of things we use to save ourselves from needing God?
