Adapted from the first part of the Homily “Of Good Works and First of Fasting” in the Second Book of Homilies. The two Books of Homilies are the official sermons of the Church of England in the 16th Century, endorsed by the 39 Articles of Religion. While they have unfortunately fallen into disuse, they are one of the classical elements of post-Reformation Anglican theology.
