SERMON DESCRIPTION This month we are exploring creation as our theme. We are not just beings who are created, but we are also creators ourselves. Life can be thought of as a process of evolution, of creation and re-creation. Our ability to create something new is a defining quality of our humanness. It is what makes us different from other creatures. From certain theological perspectives, our ability to be creative makes us like God. From a purely scientific view, it makes us intelligent agents of evolution. This Sunday we explored some improvisational creating in worship that allowed us to witness this unique and potentially holy human attribute in action. Such a unifying story could help humanity transcend our religious conflicts and recognize our interconnectedness. Creation myths of the many religions and cultures of the world would continue to provide values and cultural identity without having to compete regarding which story is the one true story. In such a world, science and religion would each have their respective roles and would not be seen as adversaries. At All Souls, we bring the world good news by fashioning a religion that is both scientifically wise and mythologically literate. A world which combines science and mythology creatively would be a world of hope and unity. As millions of people - including thousands of children - face starvation, barrel bombs and torture at the hands of their fellow human beings, are there any signs of hope's promise in such a dark time? Where is God in this mass devastation? How and why are Syrian Christians creating makeshift crèches? How have Syrian Muslims maintained their holidays and hope despite the inhumanity and destruction? Let's not just talk about the theory of light's birth in dark times, let's stare into the heart of darkness today and see if we can find any light. If, in fact, God is infinite (without end), then how can we who are finite (with limitations and a perceived end), define an Infinite Reality? God is not a name or a pronoun. God is not an it, a he, a she, or a they. God is a belief or ideology that varies according to culture, geography, tradition, and history. Bridging our humanity to divinity is the art and science of the human soul and sojourn.
