  • Flaws in the System: Interview with Canadian Immigration Lawyer Steven Meurrens

    Send a text

There are longstanding experiences and accusations of system racism and bias in Canada’s Immigration System.

Is it true the triage system for Indian applicants is more strict than the triage system for Chinese applicants?

Marriage fraud – how can we stop that from happening?

And how on earth do we alleviate the current backlog of applications?

Canada’s Immigration System is truly a mystery not readily explained. What we do know is what has been gleaned from Access to Information Requests. Canadian Immigration Lawyer Steven Meurrens makes those requests constantly and knows as well (or better) than anyone how it works and how it doesn’t.

    Guest: Steven Meurrens
Steven is a Vancouver based Canadian immigration lawyer. He has extensive experience in family-based immigration matters. He also has an active practice assisting people who have been denied entry to Canada and to those who have had visa applications refused. He has appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court.

Steven is the past-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association of British Columbia’s Immigration Subsection.

In this episode of All That Jas. host Jasraj Singh Hallan speaks with fellow Conservative MP John Barlow about the growing number of hurdles Canadian farmers are facing.

Canada is home to natural resources that are the envy of the world. From Biofuels to nuclear resources, many in the world see Canada as the breadbasket of resources needed and necessary around the planet. But, there are sectors that are often the target of misinformation. And as we know, misinformation is dangerous.

In this episode of All That Jas, host Jasraj  Singh Hallan speaks with Cody Battershill who is on the frontline of Canadian energy and the role it plays.  In an age of social media where everyone is given a platform, Cody explains what fuels the domestic natural resources industry and why most Canadians should be proud of a sector that's truly made in Canada.

  • Be The Change YYC

    Send a text

Chaz Smith has spent a lifetime wandering the streets of Calgary. It began in childhood as a heartbreaking, all too familiar, story. Family trauma, nowhere to go, sleeping in parkades, eventually falling into hard substance use and mental health issues.

But Chaz chose life, not only for himself, but has dedicated his life to helping others in the same situation. He launched a volunteer, not-for-profit organization called Be The Change YYC to help end homelessness. Today Chaz is part of a group on the streets that helps save lives.

Jasraj wanted to see this organization’s work first-hand, so he walked with Chaz seeing people who desperately need help, people with so much potential, and now they’re receiving it.

But COVID has been harsh. If you think it’s hard being quarantined at home so long – imagine not having any home to go to.

And the need for affordable housing is acute.

  • How to Address Canada’s Immigration Backlog

    Send a text

The backlog of Immigration applications to Canada is stunning… 1.8 million and counting. If those were one-page applications and you stacked them on top of one another they would reach a height of 700 feet. To put that in perspective, that’s taller than the Calgary Tower.

It hasn’t always been this way – it doesn’t need to be this way now. A revolving door of Immigration Ministers over the last five years doesn’t help.

Raj Sharma is one of Canada’s leading Immigration lawyers. In this episode he joins Jasraj to talk about that Immigration backlog and says it’s time to DO better, not just promise it.

He remembers that moment. The moment when he knew it was time to get in the game of life. A time to get involved and a time to serve.

Jasraj Singh Hallan was not burning up the books as a high school student. Sitting at the family dinner table, eating his mac & cheese, Jas’ father challenged him to step up.  And he did.

In this debut episode of All That Jas, member of Parliament Jasraj Singh Hallan describes his personal journey through small business, to community service to running for office and winning.

Now as an Honourable Member of Canada’s Parliament, Jas outlines his goals and dreams and reminds us how turmoil can turn to triumph.
