Remus increases his drug use to cope with the emotional strain and throws himself into his studies. During career meetings with McGonagall, all the marauders reveal their intention to join Dumbledore's fight against Voldemort after graduation, much to their professor's dismay. The full moon approaches with underlying tensions still unresolved between the friends.

He observes Sirius and Mary sleeping together on the common room couch, confirming his fears about where he stands. The chapter explores Remus's internal turmoil through imagined conversations with Grant as he grapples with the reality that his feelings are unreciprocated, while Sirius seems determined to pretend nothing happened between them.

Remus's sixteenth birthday party becomes a pivotal moment when a private conversation with Sirius on the stairs leads to their first kiss. The moment is electric but immediately complicated when Sirius rushes back to the party and publicly kisses Mary in front of everyone. Remus retreats to his dormitory, left to process the conflicting emotions of having his deepest desire fulfilled yet seemingly rejected in the same night, setting up major emotional turmoil ahead.

The marauders execute an elaborate prank involving four hundred dung bombs and timing delay spells throughout Hogwarts. The chapter explores themes of unrequited love, identity transformation, and the growing complexity of teenage relationships against the backdrop of increasing social tensions.

On Christmas morning, Sirius recovers enough to reveal the horrific details of his torture to Dumbledore and Moody. At a Black family Christmas Eve gathering attended by Death Eaters, Bellatrix Lestrange showed her Dark Mark and demanded Sirius swear allegiance to Voldemort. When he refused repeatedly, his own parents took turns torturing him with the Cruciatus curse while family members including Regulus watched helplessly. Sirius managed to escape through the library fireplace after the torture stopped, with his brother secretly helping by sending the warning owl. The revelation cements his permanent adoption into the Potter family while highlighting the complete breakdown of his birth family.

Sirius arrives at the Potters' through the floo network, unconscious from the Cruciatus curse inflicted by his own parents for refusing to swear allegiance to Voldemort. Mrs. Potter, using her healer training, tends to him while Dumbledore and Auror Alastor Moody investigate. The chapter reveals the depth of the Potters' love for Sirius as they immediately offer him permanent sanctuary, while Remus grapples with witnessing torture inflicted on someone he cares deeply about.

Remus's jealousy over Sirius and Mary intensifies as their relationship deepens, with the couple constantly kissing and making plans together. During a particularly difficult full moon approach, Remus snaps at Sirius for being late due to "snogging MacDonald," revealing his emotional turmoil. The successful Animagus transformation continues to work, giving Remus painless moons, but his internal struggle with his feelings for Sirius grows more challenging. As Mary faces increased danger from Slytherins for dating a pureblood, the political tensions of the wizarding war intersect with personal relationships in increasingly dangerous ways.
