All The Young Dudes

Sirius's fourteenth birthday arrives without the traditional Black family tea party, confirming his complete disownment from his family. Remus continues his cigarette business while grappling with new awareness of romantic dynamics as Sirius reveals he kissed Mary's cheek. The birthday party proceeds successfully despite Sirius's melancholy, and during a late-night encounter, Remus meets Peter's sister Philomena, who's been disowned for dating a muggle. Their conversation about freedom and choice challenges Remus's assumptions about magical versus muggle life, while he remains determinedly uninterested in romantic complications.

Remus tests his word-swapping spell on James, replacing "Evans" with "lumpy elephant dung" to hilarious effect during their Halloween feast. The spell proves successful when Mulciber begins spouting endearments like "angelic sweetie-pops" instead of slurs, causing the Great Hall to erupt in laughter. James suffers through an evening unable to say Lily's name properly until Remus finally releases the simple counter-jinx, revealing the marauders' spell was devastatingly effective against the Slytherins' prejudiced language.

The marauders finalize their word-swapping spell targeting Slytherin slurs, with Remus handling the technical aspects while Sirius provides creative replacement phrases. James and Sirius attend Slughorn's exclusive Slug Club party, deliberately excluded Peter and Remus, but create chaos by transfiguring jelly slugs that multiply and cover guests including Lily in slime. Their successful disruption earns them expulsion from the club and three weeks of detention, which they celebrate as a victory against elitist social structures.

After the confrontation with Snape in Hogsmeade, Sirius locks himself in the bathroom for hours, devastated by the realization that his family has truly disowned him. Remus uses blunt honesty to get Sirius to open up, and they bond over their shared experience of family rejection. Weeks later, as tensions with Slytherins escalate and blood-based slurs increase, Remus devises a brilliant revenge plan to magically alter Snape's speech, replacing his cruel words with harmless phrases. The chapter ends with another confrontation involving Regulus and the Slytherin quidditch team, solidifying Sirius's determination for comprehensive revenge.

The marauders embark on their first Hogsmeade trip, visiting Honeydukes and Zonko's before heading to the Shrieking Shack. Remus is horrified to discover that the "haunted" house where locals hear screaming is actually where he transforms each month, realizing his werewolf cries have become local legend. At the Three Broomsticks, they enjoy butterbeer until Snape provokes Sirius by revealing he's been disowned by his family and calling the marauders "dregs of society." Though Sirius shows restraint in the moment, he declares war on Snape as they leave, setting up future conflict.

Remus begins selling stolen cigarettes to older students in the early morning hours, justifying his black market operation as a way to finally afford gifts for his friends before their first Hogsmeade trip. His restlessness before the full moon leads to pranking Peter and a rare moment of openness with Sirius about his lycanthropy. After transforming in the Shrieking Shack with relatively minor injuries, Remus recovers in the hospital wing where his friends visit with homework and chocolate, while Peter unknowingly delivers payment from another customer for his cigarette business.

Remus struggles with the increased workload of third year while his friends prioritize Quidditch over homework. In his first Care of Magical Creatures class, he meets the charismatic new Professor Ferox and encounters Achilles, a kneazle known for detecting untrustworthy people. Despite Remus's fears about his werewolf nature being exposed, Achilles accepts his touch and even purrs, leading Professor Ferox to praise Remus as having trustworthy character. This unexpected validation gives Remus a rare moment of peace and self-worth, ending the chapter on a hopeful note as he dreams of lions.

Remus returns to Hogwarts after a summer of successful burglaries with Craig Newman's gang, his trunk now filled with stolen cigarettes to sell. The marauders reunite on the Hogwarts Express, but tension arises when James, Sirius, and Peter hint at a secret plan they won't share with Remus. At the welcome feast, Dumbledore's ominous warnings about unity against darkness reflect growing concerns about dark magic and a mysterious Dark Lord that Sirius's family supports. Despite the unsettling political climate, the boys find comfort in being back at school together.

Summer letters reveal that Sirius escapes his arranged marriage when Narcissa makes an unbreakable vow to marry Lucius Malfoy instead, throwing the Black family into chaos. While his friends enjoy their holidays, Remus faces isolation at St. Edmund's but finds purpose in advancing his studies with help from Madam Pomfrey's improved care. Desperate to repay his friends' generosity and lacking any money, Remus makes a fateful decision when skinhead Craig Newman recruits him for a burglary, marking the beginning of his brief criminal career.

The Marauders spend their final day of second year causing chaos, unleashing a foam flood that engulfs the castle and sends students outdoors to enjoy the sunshine. Remus juggles returning library books, an end-of-year checkup with Madam Pomfrey, and helping Sirius pack while learning about Sirius’s potential betrothal and the fear he may be sent to Durmstrang.
