In my opinion, the command “Wait” is such an underused yet incredibly useful command to have at your disposal as a dog owner. It can be applied to teaching your dog to wait for his food, wait for you to take off his leash, wait to go out the door, and more. Everyone wants the perfect dog who heels at their side, walks with a loose leash and doesn’t pull. However, the reality is that most dogs are very distracted while out on walks! As I demonstrate in this clip, I use a strategy that I like to call the “Check-In Method”. Getting in the habit of simply making your dog “check-in” (i.e. focus on you) while on walks is one of the simplest yet most powerful tactics for gaining control of your dog, and reinforcing that YOU are leading the walk!

In this clip, I discuss the processes of desensitization and counter conditioning to help a couple solve their dog's reactivity to noises. In essence, counter conditioning means training a dog to display a behavior that is different than his current reaction to a stimulus. Desensitization is the process of exposing the dog to a stimulus beginning at a very low intensity. Pulling on the leash is a very common issue I come across with my clients. In fact, I see this issue ALL the time as I am just walking down the street! People seem to have a very hard time correcting this problem and tend to give up fairly quickly, allowing their dog to forever pull on the leash. Mouthing (which includes nipping and biting) is a behavior that a majority of puppies exhibit. This behavior comes from a dog's need to chew and not entirely knowing how to control their bite inhibition. The thing is, puppies are not born to know the difference between a chew toy and your hand. Therefore, you have to teach them what is appropriate to chew on and what is not. How do you do this?
