Forestry is the science and craft of creating, managing, planting, using, conserving and repairing forests, woodlands, and associated resources for human and environmental benefits. Forestry is practised in plantations and natural stands. Hundy had been out in the bush for years and encountered some challenging situations.

Hundy plays for the Mercury Bay Rugby Club and shares some fascinating stories, from the field to the forest.

Meet Hāni Dread

Hāni Totorewa aka Hāni Dread is an artist from Rangiriri Paa, whose waiata (songs) seek to address cultural injustices through conscious-based roots reggae.

Hāni is passionate about his culture and people. He was one of the founding members of the legendary Aotearoa reggae band Katchafire, and since he left the band seven years ago, Totorewa has remained active musically, playing as a session musician, and performing live shows with the likes of Maisey Rika and Ria Hall, while also working as a te reo and music teacher.

Tik Tok challenges and dance moves share space with beautiful kai (food) and mahi toi (craft, artwork) on their social media. The girls are all about empowering women and indigenous people. They are also currently learning sign language.

Meet Scott Simpson

Scott Simpson is a New Zealand politician and a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives. He is a member of the National Party.

Simpson's ancestors settled in Kūaotunu, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the 1800s. He grew up in Auckland and was educated at the University of Auckland, graduating with a law degree.

Simpson has been MP for Coromandel since 2011 and served as Minister of Statistics, Associate Minister of Immigration and Associate Minister for the Environment at the close of the Fifth National Government.

Meet Anita Prime

Anita began singing at a very early age, learning piano from age five and went on to learn the flute, guitar and drums. Prime entered her first talent contest at 13 as part of a group called Three 'n One. As an adult, she worked the New Zealand club circuit and performed in community and charity events.

In March 2011, Prime was nominated for two LA Music Awards, Best International Artist and Best Music Video for La La La. She performed at the Nomination Awards ceremony and again toured the US, including other Los Angeles and New York venues. In November of the same year, Prime won the LA Music Awards Best Music Video category.

Prime joined 2011 All-Star Rock Tour alongside Orleans, Robbie Dupree, Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow & Deep Purple), and Joe Bouchard (Blue Öyster Cult).

Prime has worked with charitable group Team Xtreme, a charity that helps youth with esteem and life skills issues, and appeared in fundraising concerts.

In the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours, Prime was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for her services to youth and the community.

Meet Tanya Arnold

You can always smell good cooking, but what if you can’t see it? It’s a problem that Tanya Arnold knows all too well. Being diagnosed as a child with keratoconus, a disorder of the eye that results in progressive thinning of the cornea, you would think the last thing she would be doing is chopping up vegetables with a large, sharp knife.

While recovering at home after a third cornea transplant, Tanya’s husband suggested they register to operate a food business from home. She wasn’t going to let her eyesight be a problem. She has learnt to adapt by relying on her other senses to get by, and she organises her kitchen in a way that she knows by memory where everything is.

When Tanya stumbled across the recipes of Cynthia Louise, a well-known whole food chef specialising in vegan dishes, she was inspired to make her new business venture plant-based, despite not being vegan herself.

nzDan studied to become a personal trainer while competing in boxing. After graduating with an exercise science degree in 2011, he freelanced and contracted to a commercial gym. 

Entering 2019, he saw an opportunity to add massage service to grow his skills and supplement his income. This provided him with a higher pay and flexible hours to work less and develop new skills. He studied Web Development and Graphic Design so he could build his own websites.

Sick of being broke, he used his skills to design a massage website to promote his work. He bought a van where he later built his studio on wheels and now he is a porn pioneer in NZ.

Meet Brent and Larissa McCown

Tattoo Black’s studio in Tairua is like a time capsule. The walls are lined with art and crafts from many different cultures. There are dozens of awards for Tribal tattooing from 15 years spent working in Europe and over 35 tattoo conventions a year. Brent jokes that he made his mistakes on Europeans to perfect his art, before returning home pre-covid with his Dutch wife Larissa, also a talented tattoo artist.

Tattoos are always called “teachers”. They teach young boys how to be better men. In Polynesian culture, where the women are already strong, tattoos are for protection. Brent and Larissa help people know and understand their lives better through getting tattoed. 

Brent and Larissa tattoo with machines, but their passion is in traditional instruments and understanding the meaning and cultural history of Tatau.

Meet Kim Lawry

Kim believes that New Zealand’s ecosystems are truly unique, evolved over millions of years in isolation from the outside world. Since the arrival of man, so much has changed. Many people realise just how special the New Zealand environment is, and just how much work is required to protect it for future generations.

Kim ran COLC, an international language school, for many years. From as early as 2012 the students from the school's Activity Programme, began to help establish a Native Plant Nursery, and over time we developed a number of other environmental initiatives. In the course of the next seven years those ideas grew into projects reaching out into our community and the surrounding area.

When the language school closed its doors in 2019, its nursery and the attached environmental projects continued to evolve into what is the Mercury Bay Environmental Trust (MBET) today, running a nursery in Whitianga, supplying eco-sourced native plants for, and being involved with the planting and upkeep of several restoration projects around the Coromandel Peninsula.
