On the 4th day of August, we call to our remembrance the Holy life and work of St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order. In St. Dominic, we find a model of the teaching office of the Church, by which the disorders of heresy and schism are driven out, not with the sword, but but loving and faithful teaching.

In our continuing celebration of St. Peter's Chains, let us be careful to attend to the words of Holy Scripture, and pay careful heed to the exposition of them by St. Augustine the Bishop.

From the earliest days of the Church, the chains from which St. Peter was freed by the angel (Acts 12), were held in great honor by the Church, and on August 1, which marks the date of the consecration of the Basilica of St. Peter's Chains in Rome during the first part of the 5th century.
