Brian dials up Ken Plourde from the Montana's FWP. Ken is on of the Upland Game Bird Habitat Specialist for the Northeast part of the state. We chat about his journey as a bird hunter growing up in New England and migrating to Montana. The bird hunting convesation discusses how to target Huns and some tips for people coming to MT to hunt. Ken shares his strategies for Sage Grouse that should drive more success in the vast sea of sage.

Audio Quailty Warning - Zencastr FAILED and Brad had to call into the studio. Our phone call was poorer audio than Brian expects. He apologizes for this show not meeting normal standards from guest audio quality perspective. However, the conversation is too good to not to air.

Data collection - we are all aware of it. Most of us probably acknowledge our privacy is invaded daily but give in to the modern world without much caution. Brian is guilty as charged. He definitely has a love hate relationship with technology and its dark side.

Have you wondered - should I give the Feds the real numbers or just make them up? In all seriousness, Brian as been there. Why do I have to give how many birds I hunted last year (goose, ducks, woodcock, ext.). I had a good season last year - We ate a lot of woodcock. Am I going to draw attention from a Warden if I answer that I harvested 20 woodcock last year? These thoughts I'm sure have crossed your mind as the clerk behind the license machine asks those HIP Certification questions.

Brian and Brad clear the air on HIP. What the data is used for. How submitting information helps hunter opportunity and proper management tools. Even more, How this data helps protect our hunting heritage from encroachments by other governmental agencies.

Brad spend an extensive amount of his career working for United States Fish and Wildlife Service. After many different roles around Migratory birds he was promoted in 2011 to the Chief for the Division of Migratory Bird Management. THE GUY for all things migratory at USFW. During his tenure, Brad played an vital role implementing the collection and analyzation of data. After sometime the HIP Certification was formally launched as a tool for USFW to understand real harvest and success rates of hunters. This information has been paramount in setting regulations and implementing changes to waterfowl and migratory birds species. The data has impacted our populations, habitat, and opportunity to recreate immensely.

With the kick off of the 2022 bird hunting season Brian and a pack of dogs headed west to make a pilgrimage to the last best place on earth... Montana. Brian was able to wrangle Travis to come over to camp and hang out behind the Yukon (to stay out of the wind) and bull sh** about the week. Travis had great success chasing Huns. Brian didn't do so well on the Huns but banged out sharp-tails! Travis and Brian both hunt Kansas so there is a smattering of bird hunting talk.

Its officially hunting season. Brian dials up Gabe Stone with the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society. Brian wanted to get the skinny on what is going on in Eagle River, WI on the opening weekend of the 2022 Timberdoodle season. RGS is hosting its annual Wisconsin Grouse Camp.

Gabe and Brian chat bird dogs and grouse. Gabe shares some of his past adventures. He spend the better part of two bird seasons in a van hunting the king of the woods in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Brian has an in studio guest for a great conversation regarding some of the under appreciated fish that get little attention. Drew has been angling for Redhorse, gar, bowfin, and other species the state of Minnesota regulates as "rough fish."

Drew and his brother started www.roughfish.com in 2000 to promote and change public opinion on these fish. With some public opinion changing, Minnesota is also proposing with a new bill (No Junk Fish Bill) to list and regulate these species separately. The debate around game and non-game species has been going on for a long time. Today, the Sportfishing Restoration act provides federal funds to game fish species. The non game fish are left out. Getting this bill passed will provide more options, funding, and tools to fisheries managers in Minnesota. This is HUGE because these fish have a symbiotic relationship with our game species. Furthermore, they are NATIVE to our waters. Giving the future at stake, managing ALL fish is important. There are native fish that are categorized by "rough fish" that are endangered or threatened.

Mark Jones comes on the show to talk about his past career as a wildlife biologist and his new direction. Mark has taken on a new Role with Gun owners of America to spearhead their Second Amendment Hunters initiative. Brian and Mark stumble onto a fairly heated topic around Bobwhite Quail research and some recent publications asserting better quail populations. This publication definitely impacted Brian's view on gentleman bob. However, Mark is working with other Wildlife Biologists to rebut that publications. This was an unexpected turn in the conversation so early. Mark promised to come back once their article is published later this year.

The main meat and potato's of this episode - Mark and Brian discuss the important role hunters have in the nations gun debate.

Mark called Brian a few days after recording when the Biden administration released new potential regulations on gun sales, parts sales, and an effort to make a national gun registration.
