Building Faithfully: build for the Lord alone sermon from our online service Sunday 17th January 2021. 

Four months have past since Nehemiah discovered the dreadful state of the city of Jerusalem. After a period of sadness, prayer and repentance Nehemiah is presented with an opportunity to act. He is serving as a cupbearer to the King of Persia who notices his ‘sadness of heart’. Will Nehemiah risk losing his position, comfort and reputation by aligning himself to the work of rebuilding the city of Jerusalem? Will he step out and act to do what he feels God has called him to do?

As a small remnant of people return to their homeland, they discover a level of devastation that seems beyond redemption. The place that was once home is in ruins. The site they survey is not just discouraging, it feels utterly hopeless and any type of future for their city seems an impossible dream. Have you ever felt like that? If you have, open the book of Nehemiah and read the first chapter. The people of Israel have returned from captivity only to find the vestiges of a once thriving Jerusalem. Even the Temple, the place where God was once present, lays waste. Where do you start when faced by such desolation? Is the city beyond redemption? NO! Nehemiah, an ordinary working man, shows us how his engagement with God resulted in the historic rebuilding of the city of God.
