Marshalltown, Iowa, had six minutes between its tornado warning and touchdown on July 19, 2018. The National Weather Service in Des Moines issued the warning at 4:02 PM, outdoor sirens sounded at 4:05, and at 4:08 a trained spotter confirmed the tornado on the ground two miles southwest of the city. Rated EF-3, it tracked eighteen miles and damaged or destroyed more than four hundred buildings, including the county courthouse at the heart of downtown. Twenty-two people were injured, none with life-threatening wounds, and one man, sixty-seven years old, was killed when his house collapsed around the interior bathroom where he had sheltered. This documentary reconstructs the warning timeline, the search of damaged structures that began within minutes, and the debate over siren desensitization in a city where weekly tests had taught some residents to ignore the sound. It closes with the courthouse clock tower, rebuilt from its original plans.
