Pascal Boileau is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology. He served as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department in University Hospital of Nice until 2020 and acted as Vice-Dean for Research at the Medical University of Nice. Since November 2020, he is working at the ICR (Institut de Chirurgie Reparatrice), a private clinic, taking charge of shoulder diseases and sports-related injury in Nice.
He specializes in shoulder arthroscopy, minimally invasive surgery, and shoulder replacement for the treatment of rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, osteoarthritis, and fractures around the shoulder. His considerable experience on surgical technique and clinical research work result in better outcomes in patients with shoulder osteoarthritis, instability and cuff tear arthropathy due to increasing interests on arthroplasty. He also deals with sports medicine for professional athletes and general populations with sports injuries of the shoulder.
Pascal Boileau performed three fellowships:
Orthopaedic Fellowship in Lyon (Pr Henri Dejour) in 1988-89 where he met Gilles Walch MD with who he started a fruitful collaboration.Shoulder and Knee Fellowship in USA in June-September 1990 with an award of the French Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SOFCOT).Shoulder ASES/ SECEC Fellowship in USA in October-November 1993 with a Scholarship of the European Society of the Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC).By outstanding basic and clinical research on shoulder replacement, he received many prizes and awards, including:
“Gisela Sturm Prize” from EFORT in 1997 for the design and development of the first anatomical shoulder arthroplasty (AequalisTM Tornier prosthesis)“Charles Neer Award” in 2005 for the Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty Biomechanics and Results“ICSES Prize” (Internal Conference on Shoulder & Elbow Surgery) in 2006 for the best clinical research for developing the ISIS score.SECEC Research Grant 2008: for the best clinical research: Tendon repair technique using Platelet rich fibrin as an autologous augmentation in repair of chronic rotator cuff tendon tears. Zumstein M, Rumian A, Thélu CE, Lesbats V, O’Shea, K, Schaer M, Boileau P.“Paul Grammont Award” in 2019, provided to the best researcher who contributed to the understanding and care of Fracture Sequelae treated with a Reverse Prosthesis. He participated in the design and development of many shoulder prostheses and implants, including Aequalis Anatomic prosthesis, Aequalis Reverse prosthesis, Aequalis fracture prosthesis. He also designed the first long-peg Aequalis glenoid baseplate for BIO-RSA. He is one of the conceptors of the first convertible “onlay” prosthesis (Aequalis Ascend prosthesis) and the convertible “flush lay” prosthesis (Perform prosthesis). He is one of the conceptors of the Perform Fracture Prosthesis, an anatomic and reversed prosthesis for fractures, recently released. He is also the conceptor and designer of the Aequalis IM Nail, the first and only 3rd Generation IM Humeral Nail based on tuberosity fixation (instead of Humeral head fixation) with locking screw technology. He is also the inventor of the Nice knot using a looped suture (Nice Loop).
He is the inventor of many open and arthroscopic surgical procedures or techniques including:
the technique of tuberosity reconstruction around a shoulder prosthesis (Hemi and Reverse) and around the Aequalis IM Nailthe technique and concept of glenoid bony lateralization using humeral bone graft or BIO-RSA (Bony Increased Offset Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty) started in 2006the technique and concept of glenoid bony reconstruction using humeral bone graft or Angled BIO-RSA in case of glenoid erosion or bone loss (Type B2 or C Glenoid)the technique and concept of correction of superior glenoid inclination using humeral bone graft (Angled BIO-RSA) to correct the RSA Anglethe technique and concept of Latissimus tendon transfer and L’Episcopo tendon transfer in isolation or in combination with RSAthe concept and technique of Percutaneous IM Nailing of 2-part surgical neck fracturesthe arthroscopic Latarjet technique and bone blocks procedures using suture button fixationthe arthroscopic Trillat procedurethe arthroscopic Modified Weaver-Dunn procedurethe arthroscopic Posterior bone Block using suture anchorsAnother field of his interests is the development of one of the first softwares to plan shoulder arthroplasty with 2D/3D kinematic models of joints using computer-based virtual figure drawings and motion analysis. Pascal Boileau created a start-up, the IMASCAP company with Gilles Walch, MD and Jean Chaoui PhD that led to the development of the BLUEPRINT software for planning shoulder replacement. The IMASCAP company and Blueprint software were acquired in 2017 by WRIGHT Medical and then by STRYKER.
Since 2003, he successfully organized the Nice Shoulder Course, biannually from 2004 with the 13th edition coming in 2026. This course is one the most attended shoulder courses with among 1000 shoulder surgeons from more than 60 countries. He actively participates in international meetings and symposiums to share his knowledge and experience with peers and younger surgeons. From 2006 to 2010, he acted as General secretary of SECEC and, from 2010 to 2012, served as President Elect of the European Shoulder & Elbow Society (SECEC).
He is a Honorary member of the French Orthopaedic and Traumatolgy Society (SOFCOT) and French Arthroscopy Society (SFA). He is also an associated member of many scientific national and international learned societies of orthopaedics and shoulder and elbow surgery, including AAOS, ASES, SECEC-ESSE, DVSE, Polish, Korean, Portuguese Shoulder & Elbow Society.
Dr. Boileau has published more than 250 scientific articles in peer review journals until now with many being among the most cited articles. His publications concern all fields of shoulder surgery and some articles are landmark articles.
