"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." (James Dean)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
It would be no exaggeration to say that James Dean has been mythologized more than any other actor in history, a development due more to his off-screen personality and conduct than the films he actually starred in. Much of Dean's appeal derives from his humble and ordinary origins, and audiences are drawn to the romance of the Indiana farm boy who catapulted to the top of the motion picture industry in a single year - the same year that would see him die.
Of course, James Dean remains well-known for being anything but humble and ordinary. As famous as his films are, Dean's story is inextricably tied to his love of racing cars and his death in a high-speed car crash. And, though Dean was already wildly famous at the time of his death, there is no question that his death only enhanced his fame. One study found evidence of a "James Dean effect", concluding that a star's popularity benefits if the star dies young instead of living longer and losing luster. By dying young, Dean actually ensured that his name would remain famous; his appeal has transcended generations.

Seemed like a lot of gloom and doom followed him
Short, but then Dean didn't live that long. Interesting what there is. I was a young kid living in L.A. at the time
and he was a big deal. Seemed like a lot of gloom and doom followed him, the Charles River writer seems to think it was
mostly movie producers hype..
I seen all three of his movies while I was in California and wasn't that impressed other than he was saying what many teenagers
were thinking, moaning and groaning as he went along..
He of course was the Star in Rebel and East of Eden, but not in Giant as they said..I felt he was over shadowed by Liz
and Hudson...
Well written, Love the Charles Rivers Kindle books...
Dutch............
James Dean a Legend
James Dean was a star that burned for a short time..This book clearly showed how talented he was and how it was a cruel twist of fate that he died so young...The American screen lost a star at the begining of his climb to great stardom.
A JAMES DEAN PRIMER
Being a die hard JD fan,I couldn't resist buying another JD book. But it's more for the uninitiated than for the JD devotee and more like a primer that touches upon his life without delving. It gives a lot of details and is a quick read which will make you want to know more about this iconic actor.
Gives you all you need to know about James Dean
My son needed to do a report and James Dean and we found this book to be the most factual of the
ones we read. It is succinct - gets you to the point without wild speculation. We really learned a lot
Nice, Concise Bio of James Dean
The author keeps things very balanced, especially when there are conflicting accounts of Dean and especially his sexuality.
