Publisher's Summary:
From the moment the film industry became a burgeoning business that offered actresses an opportunity to seek fame and fortune, millions of girls across America have dreamed of making it big on screen, despite the long odds against them. And yet, among the few that have catapulted to superstardom, few did it as quickly, effortlessly, or as seemingly disinterestedly as Kim Novak. An art student in her early 20s, Novak found herself in Los Angeles by chance and appeared as an extra in a 1954 film to earn money, only to be almost immediately discovered by Columbia and turned into a star when she appeared in Picnic (1955).
Just about every actress would kill to have the success Novak had during her first decade as an actress, but after 1965, she'd decided that she was mostly through with making films, despite still being near the peak of her career. After starring in The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders (1965), Novak only made a dozen more films over the next 26 years, and she has not appeared in a movie since Liebestraum (1991). While her decision to get out of Hollywood presents a classic what-if over where her career may have ended up had she kept going, Novak has been one of the rare stars happier to thrive outside of the spotlight, continuing to paint and raise animals while living on an Oregon ranch with her husband of nearly 40 years.

The Legends live on!
This book was incredible. I loved her in the movies and always thought it a shame that she had quit making them. But now after reading this I understand and if she's happy than that was the way that it was suppose to be. Her health was something that I don't think anyone really knew anything about. She was and is VERY fortunate to have the type that she does and not the debilitating kind. To be able to live the life that she has, her painting and her love of animals, is amazing. There are many, myself included that would give anything to have that kind of life even with the problems she has suffered through. I very happy for her!
Review of The Life of Kim Novak
Not a great book, but okay. Not a lot of pages. Easy read. Kim Novak was my favorite movie star so I bought this book. Not a very deep or revealing look at the star. Would like to read a good autobiography or biography on Kim Novak.
Good book
It captures the elusive star in her own words. I enjoyed reading it and learned the secret of her mysterious quality. She grew up worshipping Greta Garbo, the master of mystery and like her idol she took her exit from the screen much too soon and left us wanting for more.
Why so superficial?
Love Ms. Novak. Unfortunately, this cursory biography gives short shrift to her and her career. More depth would have been much appreciated.
Charged too much.
Very disappointed thought would be larger book
