On this episode of American Real, Roger asks John about the process of writing his book, and if the output would have changed if he had released the book 10 years prior. "As time changed, and it changed probably 3 or 4 times," John says. "Because we're talking in the early 2000s or mid 2000s, things were different, and then they changed from that. So it had to continue to change. So I had to bring in people that was, you know, millennials, that kind of went through the old guard to the new guard. They kind of bridged the gap between the old guard and the new guard."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Dr. Justo as to why Dr. Justo chose to pursue becoming an author in addition to a speaker and a surgeon. "I get that question quite often. I even question myself with that very same question and truly I think what it's been is again going along the concept of delayed gratification," Dr. Justo says. "In the first half of my career professional career I made some good decisions and I made some really bad decisions that the second half of my career is when I really excelled and I learned from my mistakes. I embrace those mistakes and as my wife repeatedly tells me that I made lemonade out of all the lemons that I was dealt. But certainly, I'm very proud of what I've accomplished and so I started thinking, you know, especially raising our kids. It's been probably the biggest challenge in my life. It is not really fully realizing how difficult in today's society it is, raising teenagers in particular, and so this whole concept of the delayed gratification really started hitting... I try and talk to them and explain to them. And you know, they nod their head and they seemingly agree but in reality they don't, because I see their actions and I see what they say, and so they just don't get it. They just don't get it. So so as a result I first decided to venture in the way of the TEDx stage and that happened purely by in a sense just by luck... here it is, now August. We're what, seven, eight months into it? And it's now exceeded over 6 million views. But even prior to that, you know I saw the momentum that it was gaining and that's what started me thinking, 'hey, you know maybe I need to write a book about this and see if I can expand upon the concepts which I started.'"

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Dr. George about God having a sense of humor when some people take life too seriously. "Each day is a new beginning," Dr. George says. "God's mercies and Grace are new for us each day. What happened in the past is the past. God doesn't define us by the past. He defines us when he wakes us up - what are we going to do for him today? I always say if you want to give the Lord a good laugh, tell him your plans. When when my will lines up with the will of the Lord, nothing's going to stop it, right? And so I am anointed by him and chosen by him just to spread the gospel message of salvation through healthcare."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks David about how he came up with the concept of getting his book written. "I spent a lot of years behind bars, and I had many guys tell me that my life was like a movie," David says. "Many of these guys had actually been there with me through these events that I had experienced, and they told me for years, 'you have to write this down, people need to see this.' For the last 2 years of my incarceration, I wrote. And I kept many of my journals throughout my incarceration, so I had books to go off, I had journals to go off of and use those as a platform to write my book."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Bob to reflect on his experiences driving across the Key Bridge as he was writing his book. "I would drive over that bridge to go from one side of the harbor to the other and and I found it to be a beautiful drive," Bob says. "But one of the things that you got from the top of that bridge was a panoramic view of Baltimore City, which included looking down into Fort McHenry, you literally looked into Fort McHenry, which is really just a spectacular scene. I love to be where history took place, not just in the same town or in the same region, but in the very spot."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Michal about how the premise of her book came to be. "This guy, and he really was a bad guy, but he was a charmer," Michal says. "And he came to me and we sat down, and he talked about what had happened. He wanted a story done, and now, the more I look back on it, I think, 'what was his motivation? Why would a guy who is a convicted felon want this to happen? Why would he want this story to happen?'"

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Juan about his writing journey and if it was a positive outlet for him. "Oh yes, better than therapy," Juan says. "Writing or any type of art is way better than therapy. It's just you and a blank page or a canvas. And you just tell it whatever you want."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Denis about how he built the framework for his book. "So the way I came to it was with a mind map," Denis says. "So I basically had a picture, and I had arcs. And I'm trying to look at the arc of my life, which, I journal, and I was able to refer back to some different things. But primarily it was remembering about my own story, so the arc of my story, then the arc of the Biblical story to try to frame that up, and then the arc of the people that I've been privileged to be a spiritual mentor to."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Steven about the process of putting together his book. "Actually, when I contacted you all, most of the tenets of that book had already been written. So the way I did it was, over the past few years I have been writing, and then I mostly had everything I had to say in the book. So when I contacted you all, all we had to do was put it all together and wanted to say in the book. So when I contacted you all, all we had to do was put it all together and edit it and... ready to publish. I've been writing a long time, I think I started writing when I was in high school. When I was high school I did a lot of writing because what I majored in was business... I found out over the years, I enjoyed writing. By the times I was 21, 22 years old, I was writing all kinds of things."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Marcella about her experience as an educator and how it relates to her career as an author. "I've been teaching for well over 20 years, going more towards 30, and I feel like I started teaching because of my childhood. So I do have foster care experiences, I've had trauma experiences, and it was the love of teachers that pulled me in, the ones who got me writing. Writing and reading became kind of my outlet, my best friend, my way of coping."
