-Today we're talking about something most families only dream about: what it really takes to raise a young man who reaches the NFL. To put the journey in perspective in the US. There are roughly 1 million boys playing 11 man high school football in any given year. From there, the funnel narrows fast. The NCAA estimates that among draft eligible Division one players, only about 3.8% are selected in the NFL draft. In other words, getting drafted isn't just hard. It's very rare. Now imagine that happening twice in one household, with two brothers, both getting the NFL call. Today's guest is Joe Guggia, author of "Blind Eye Love: A Young Girl's Abusive Childhood Becomes a Life of Optimism." The book is a multi-generational California saga based on true events that confronts abuse, silence, and the long road to healing. As a floral designer for over 40 years, writing has been a hidden passion that Joe is now working towards being his full time job.On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Joe how all this came to be and what gave him the strength to putting the pen to the paper. "Well, it's a family that I know well," Joe says. "It's not my own, per se. And I've written, like, floral articles over the years for different publications. I wanted to do this. I did a self-published design book, but, you know, dabbled in it all, knowing that if you can write one thing that's good and solid, get it marketed and people relate to it, it can be successful, but monetarily and personally. So that's kind of my goal. I'm a little older now. I'm still a florist. I do it and it's great. But I just thought, let's start doing something else. So I just started making notes about things. I had no idea about anything, really. It was just background that I was aware of. And I just researched the company and talked to you and just decided to go with it."

Type two diabetes is about 30%. Maybe a little bit more smoking. If you're a smoker, you have a 50% increase in dying early. Okay, serious numbers. Let me compare those to something you've never had your doctor talk to you about. We talk to you about strength and VO2 max. If you're weak, meaning you have low muscular strength and you're losing your strength as you age, you're carrying a 250% higher risk of death, 250%."

-How do you explore what it means to grow up in the shadows of trauma? To carry the weight of rejection and to somehow find a way through it all. Not just with scars, but with strength. That's the journey we're stepping into today. In this episode, we'll talk about post-traumatic stress syndrome, homophobia, family dysfunction, domestic violence, and the fragile but essential roads toward forgiveness and reconciliation. In 1978, the late Barbara Johnson, a bestselling Christian author, published a book called “Where Does a Mother Go to Resign?” Then later, the publisher changed the name to “When Your Child Breaks Your Heart.” A heartfelt but one sided account of her grief after her son came out as gay. That book touched the hearts of many, but it also told only half the story. Now, decades later, David Johnson, her son, is sharing the other half. David is an author, survivor, cinema therapist and behavior modification psychotherapist. His new book, “When All Else Fails, Blame Your Mother,” is a powerful and personal response to the narrative his mother left behind. It's an unfiltered, emotionally raw, and often hilariously biting look at trauma, family, and what it means to take your story back. He's also the founder of the Crown Bear Society and the creative force behind the YouTube channel, David The Cinema Therapist, where he uses film and humor as therapeutic tools to help others heal, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Her titles are like, ‘I'm So Glad You Told Me What I Didn't Want to Know,’ and ‘Splashes Of Joy From The Cesspools Of Life,’ she was known for her crazy titles.”
