When I meet successful people, I hope their brilliance and attraction rubs off on me. Like, I absorb their superpowers. It’s an honor and reality check rolled in one. Well, this week, Hutton Honors College brought in Pulitzer Prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri, personally introducing many people to their idol-many of which are American Student Radio producers. A room full of wannabes attended this event. They wannabe successful writers. Win the Pulitzer. Wannabe talented and recognized for it, because who doesn’t want that? For some of us, home isn’t complete without our pets. Just over a year ago, Trampass Walden lost his dog, an 8-year-old beagle mix named Levi. From posting hundreds of fliers to speaking with psychics, Trampass Walden has tried it all to find his missing friend. Even after so long, he’s refusing to give up, because home isn’t right for him without Levi. Emily Miles brings us this story.

This week was spring break for the students here at Indiana University. While some students were begging their parents for the chance to go to exciting and unfamiliar places like Paris, Korea, or Cancun, ASR producer Nyssa Cruz asked her family if she could instead make the trip back home – all the way down in Austin, Texas.

Because we’re focusing on home this week, I thought it made sense to do a story from my own hometown of Walled Lake, Michigan, one of many suburbs outside of Detroit. A childhood friend of mine just started her freshman year of college. Her name is Megan and, like me, she decided to go out of state for her education; while I’m here at Indiana University, she’s having her own adventures up at Purdue. Unlike Nyssa in our last piece, though, she hasn’t started calling her new school “home” just yet.

Don Gaira has been painting almost his whole life. An Indiana University graduate, he went on to work on art for movies such as The Devil Wears Prada. He lived in New York for a few years before moving back to Bloomington, where he could be close to his wife’s family and revisit the school where he got his degree in art. Laura Schulte has the story.

But what would you do if someone else who had once called your lodging “home” refused to leave? Senior, Elizabeth Pappas tells us her story of living in her Bloomington home with all of its residents - but especially the dead one. Morgan Burris brings us this story.

Sometimes “home” can change, even well after you’ve graduated from college and made a family of your own. Kristy Ross had to move in with her mother after being diagnosed with MS. Her daughter, Kacey, talks about how their home has changed along with Kristy’s health.
