Over the last few weeks, we’ve taken you across the heritage area to hear from real people doing real things to promote and preserve the culture of the Atchafalaya. For our finale episode, we look to the future with current Executive Director Justin Lemoine.

Every elementary school student knows about the Underground Railroad, but there were other roads to freedom. Today we’re visiting the River Road African American museum, which exhibits the story of freedom seeking and survival in the Deep South with the museum's founder, Kathe Hambrick.

At the edge of Louisiana, where the land and water meet, is a garden made not of flowers and bushes, but of concrete and stone. This week, we’re visiting the Chauvin Sculpture Garden with the keeper of the keys himself, Dr. Gary Lafleur.

The spirit and resiliency of the Cajun people emerged from trial, hardships, and a global journey. Dr. Mark Rees and the New Acadia Project are searching for the original settlement of the Acadian people, who came to call Louisiana “home.”

The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is home to the largest river swamp in North America, and today's guest has seen a good bit of it. Ben Pierce is the Executive Director of Louisiana Swamp Base, which runs the High Adventure Trek for the Boy Scouts of America. Join us as we dispel myths about basin wildlife, discuss Caroline's first paddling experience, and learn about the beauty and majesty of the Atchafalaya swamp.

The story of the Atchafalaya is one of water...both living with it, and in spite of it. Take a journey through our water heritage and learn more about the national heritage areas program with Debra Credeur, the first executive director of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.
