Guest Interview: Dr. Hongfang Liu, PhD, Consultant, Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics, Department of Health Sciences Research, Chair, Division of Digital Health Sciences, Department of Health Sciences Research, Professor, Biomedical Informatics
Dr. Hongfang Liu's in informatics has resulted in informatics systems that unlock clinical information stored in clinical narratives. Her work accelerates the pace of knowledge discovery, implementation and delivery for improved health care. Dr. Liu's primary research is to facilitate the secondary use of clinical data for clinical and translational science research and health care delivery improvement using data science, artificial intelligence and informatics approaches. Dr. Liu's research has been extensively funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health (NIH) since 2003. Dr. Liu is a member of several professional societies, including the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB).
Host: Dr. Randa Perkins, MD, FAMIA Randa Perkins, MD is the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Moffitt Cancer Center. In her role as CMIO she is responsible for contributing to the long-term vision of IT health systems at Moffitt, and the Clinical Informatics Department, which facilitates both implementation and optimization of the electronic health record (EHR) and its various uses.
Guest Interview: Dr. Thankam P. Thyvalikakath, DMD, MDS, PhD Dr. Thankam Thyvalikakath is a biomedical informatics researcher and dentist. She is Director of the dental informatics core initiative at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. The core's primary objective is to enhance patient care through improved data capture, documentation and analysis of electronic health record data. Dr. Thyvalikakath's research focuses on leveraging electronic health record data for clinical research and quality improvement purposes; applying user-centered design and cognitive engineering methods to design clinical systems that better support clinicians' decision-making processes; implementation and evaluation of clinical decision support systems; and facilitating health information exchange to promote coordinated care between medical and dental care providers.
Host: Wendy Marie Ingram, PhD, is a Psychiatric Epidemiology Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Guest Interview: Dr. Emily Webber, MD, FAAP, FAMIA, is the chief medical information officer at Riley Children's Health and Associate CMIO for Indiana University (IU) Health. She is a pediatric hospitalist at Riley Hospital for Children and also is focused on the optimization of health IT, applications to improve quality care and patient safety and promoting the health of Indiana children and communities.
Host: Wendy Marie Ingram, PhD, is a Psychiatric Epidemiology Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Guest Interview: Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NLM is the world's largest biomedical library and the producer of digital information services used by scientists, health professionals and members of the public worldwide.
Since assuming the directorship in August 2016, Dr. Brennan has positioned the Library to be the hub of data science at NIH and a national and international leader in the field. She spearheaded the development of a new strategic plan that envisions NLM a platform for biomedical discovery and data-powered health. Leveraging NLM's heavily used data and information resources, intramural research, and extramural research and training programs, Brennan aims for NLM to accelerate data-driven discovery and health, engage with new users in new ways, and develop the workforce for a data-driven future.
Her professional accomplishments reflect her background, which unites engineering, information technology, and clinical care to improve the public health and ensure the best possible experience in patient care.
