A great adventure story!
Lucinda Clarke is such a great storyteller and I was instantly drawn into the story of Amie who ends up in Africa because of her husband. I love the African setting and the author does such a good job of describing the surroundings that you feel as if you are out in Africa. Amie:African Adventure is a great read and I highly recommend it.
Fasinating, educational, and a very fast read
This story starts out with our protagonist, Amie, being a very whiny and self-absorbed person. She doesn't want to go to Africa even though it is a great opportunity for her husband, and all of her family and friends encouraged her to have an adventure. As the story progresses and Amie settles into the ins and outs of a totally different culture than hers, we see her character start to mature. She eases into their lifestyle and sees another whole and different world than what she grew up in (England). Women are 2nd class citizens and she has to learn to adjust. Then, when she has become accustom to her new life, all hell breaks loose and rebels are invading and bombing her town. Things just get worse, she's thrown into jail, escapes, learns to fend for herself in the jungle, etc. It truly is amazing and very fast paced. It is a bit lengthy but I couldn't put the book down and read it in 2 days! It also made me appreciate the luxuries that we live in. We are truly blessed to live in a democratic nation and not be in fear of government officials knocking down your door. We have food and shelter. Most of the people in Africa live day to day trying to get by on meager wages. I've learned a lot about the African culture and I look forward to the next book in this series, that I just bought (I usually don't "buy" books because there are so many free ones, like this one). I need to know if she finds Angelina and any of her other friends that she left behind in this book. There is violence in this story, but no foul words.
A Travel-Lit Thriller Combo
This is an extremely well-crafted tale. The writing is seamless. The author seems to have a sixth sense for just how much time to spend on a topic to balance character development with forward plot movement. I donât usually do âliteraryâ because itâs been my experience that itâs none of those things. Theyâre the books that youâre forced to read in school and if it werenât for the critics telling you what was worthwhile about them, you might well overlook the diamond in the rough. Often those literary books have something to recommend them, if youâre willing to put in the hard work. Amie, by welcomed contrast, was a book that deserves to be called literary and in a good wayâmeaning itâs not a chore to read it.
The story is hard to label, but once again in a good way. It qualifies as travel literature because we leave England early on for exoticâunheard ofâlocales in Africa, where life couldnât be any more different if it was happening on another planet.
