Joe Bishop takes a closer look into racial equity, testing in schools, and how issues play out differently in urban and rural America with educators and researchers Dr. Sonya Douglass and Anna Kushner.
Dr. Douglass and Anna, in many ways, have opposite backgrounds. Dr. Douglas is the product of the fifth largest school district in the country in Las Vegas, Nevada. Anna grew up in rural Virginia. However, both became educators and invested in addressing inequality. Their research focuses on communities. Much of education centers around the individual and individual achievement over community well-being, which is where equity needs to take place.
Who is the expert when it comes to education decision-making, someone with a Ph.D. or a longtime community member? What are the unintended consequences of the Brown decision?
Special Guests: Sonya Douglass, Ed.D., is Professor of Education Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University and Director of the Black Education Research Collective. Her research focuses on education leadership, policy, and politics.
Anna Kushner is a PhD student in Education Policy at Teachers College, Columbia University. Their research interests include the politics of race, diversity, and equity in K-12 education and the role of community and student voice in education decision-making.
