Simon the Zealot was willing to make war in order to see the rightful king sit on the throne in Jerusalem. This is a courageous act to make sure that Christ sits upon the throne of David. However, our Lord does not see this act as being courageous, nor consistent with the kingdom that Christ brings. Why is this zeal wrong, and what does Amos have to say about the coming kingdom? The Lord declares that through Judah there will be the mighty warrior king that will arise in history. It is clear that the line set with Judah will continue into eternity. However, Moses declares in Chapter 32 that Israel will fail miserably, and there is little hope for their national future. Amos the prophet speaks of the Lord coming against Israel as a mighty Lion as a covenant beast bringing the curse of the Lord upon the Israelites. Has the Lord forgotten His promise? We begin with our study in the book of Amos the prophet. His book opens with these are the words of Amos. This man is merely a shepherd outside the city of Jerusalem. Why should we listen to these words? Why are his words any different from other people’s words? Why are there two contemporary kings mentioned at the opening of this book?
