Today, we spotlight Carl Bean, a Black gay singer, minister, activist, and visionary whose impact reached far beyond music.
In 1977, Carl Bean recorded I Was Born This Way, one of the first openly gay pride anthems in music history. At a time when LGBTQ people faced widespread discrimination and invisibility, the song delivered a powerful message of self-love, dignity, and pride that continues to inspire generations.
But Carl Bean's legacy didn't stop on the dance floor. He later founded the Minority AIDS Project, becoming a pioneering advocate for Black LGBTQ communities and people living with HIV/AIDS. Through faith, activism, and service, he created spaces of healing, empowerment, and hope for thousands.
His life reminds us that visibility is powerful, but community is transformational.
