We are pleased to share the video recording of the third ACE Dialogues session, featuring Olga Poiedynok from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. In the presentation that we had today, Poiedynok examines how Russia's war of aggression has catalysed a fundamental shift in Ukraine's approach to citizenship and nation-building. Her analysis demonstrates how Ukraine has moved from a state-centric, territorial model to a de-territorialised, nation-centric framework that redefines the Ukrainian nation as a global, networked community bound by allegiance rather than geography. Poiedynok argues that the mass de-territorialisation following the 2022 invasion, combined with the strategic necessity of maintaining ties with the global Ukrainian diaspora, has prompted Ukrainian policymakers to advance legislation permitting multiple citizenship. She concludes that citizenship has become Ukraine's primary instrument for preserving the nation itself in the face of existential threat.
