Welcome to episode 103 of the AI for Technical Writers podcast from Curt Robbins. This educational content is designed to give IT professionals and technical writers a competitive edge.
This episode reviews a recent article by Amy Daali, who describes herself as a disruptive AI thought leaders and engineer. In her October 8 article entitled "Why We’re Blind to the Real Speed of AI," Daali argues that people are misjudging the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence because of the “exponential growth bias,” which leads humans to perceive progress as linear rather than curved.
Daali notes that while gains in traditional metrics like accuracy appear to be slowing down—with smaller improvements between models like GPT-4o and GPT-5—this metric is fundamentally flawed for assessing true intelligence.
Her insightful article proposes that AI autonomy is a far better measure of progress, defining it as how long an AI can sustain high performance without human intervention.
Research from the METR group shows that this specific capacity has been doubling exponentially every seven months, suggesting AI systems could be capable of month-long autonomous work by 2028-2031 if this trend continues.
