30 years since the collective gasp on the courthouse steps. This was the day Michael and Alex were killed by their own mother. After nine days of searching for Susan Smith’s children we were all so invested and that’s why WSPA carried the funeral. And it’s why so many of you watched. This is the way the story unfolded on the day of the confession.

Susan Smith gets a parole hearing Nov. 20th now that she's served 30 years for drowning her toddlers Michael and Alex in a lake in Union, South Carolina. She rolled her car into that lake with the boys strapped in their car seats. Cynthia Barnes Booker was the first journalist to speak with Smith, and we worked together. We look back on the case and her early doubts about Smith's claims of a car-jacking.
