Publisher's Summary:
From Orthodox Jewish child in postwar America to mild-mannered mathematician in academia to legendary atheist activist in the heart of today's Republican South, Herb Silverman has always been outside the mainstream of American culture, politics, and religion. From this unique vantage point, he writes about the most pressing issues of our day, including those related to war, peace, patriotism, race, gender, and church-state separation. In this entertaining and thought-provoking volume, he curates some of his best written work. Silverman may see himself as an atheist stranger in a strange religious land, but thanks in part to his work as activist and author, atheists as a whole are no longer strangers in this increasingly irreligious land.
Members Reviews:
Beyond Justification
Most atheist books justify , as if atheists need to be reassured. Silverman goes past that to bravery, activism, and tolerance.
Funny and serious as hell ... which, naturally, doesn't exist
Herb Silverman has sliced up years of commentary written for the Washington Post, HuffPost and other outlets and rearranged excerpts by topic. This has resulted in an amusingly readable jab at those who would erase the wall between church and state in the United States. Silverman takes on subjects from vaccination to feminism, from prayer in schools to presidential politics, and offers his views with grace and humor.
(His Jewish jokes alone are worth the price of admissionâcoming from a godless Jew who incidentally is part of the majority of that faith in this country.)
But well beyond funny, Silverman is a religious (as well as a mathematical) scholar, and his observations about the history of this country, and the broader history of the mid-east religions is as good an introduction to the dominant monotheistic faiths that rule our world as any popular work might offer. As he notes (and documents) atheists know a lot more about the Bible and other religious tracts than most believers. Any religionist who dares to debate Herb has got his work cut out for him.
No Stranger to Insightful, Clear Writing
As would certainly be expected from a math professor, Dr. Herb Silverman builds logical case after airtight logical case in An Atheist Stranger in a Strange Religious Land: Selected Writings from the Bible Belt. His analysis of his own life and of religion in America, especially in the South is not only logical but brilliant. As might not be expected from a math man, his stories are rich with wit and warmth, with great compassion for his fellow humans, and even with some good bad jokes (even one or two anti-Semitic jokes).
Whenever I read a nonfiction book, one thing that interests me, sometimes enough to make me read the conclusion first, is what the writer was focusing on, what he hoped to tell me about. Herb Silverman made his own goals for his book clear: âIâve tried to make my condensed writings in this book â short, relevant, aesthetically pleasing, informative, and entertaining.â He succeeded exquisitely well on all five counts.
Silverman addresses topics from almost any part of the cultural landscape you can name. For example, have you ever wondered whether youâor one of your friendsâis a âKoufax Jewâ? For the definitiveâand enlighteningâanswer, read this book.
