Over three years in the making, this 16-bit tribute album recreates the myth of Zelda, celebrating the unique musical heritage of the series through an original world of music. Line Them Up! A Paper Mario: The Origami King Concert is a colossal VGM collaboration featuring… well, just about everyone. We’re joined by Daniel Romberger, Thomas Kresge, Ro Panuganti, Doug Perry, Eileen Snyder, Ben Wallace, Nabeel Ansari, Laura Intravia, and Sam Bobinski— some of the key collaborators who made it happen, but just a fraction of the many fine folks who contributed. Together they tell the whole story, from a stray idea for a little Paper Mario arrangement all the way to a 40-minute concert with live players, elaborate animation, and special guests. It's not every day that composers from the VGM world start developing their own games. Andrew Aversa (known to the OCRemix world as Zircon) embarked on that journey years ago and released his first game, Tangledeep. Andrew Luers (otherwise known as OA) decided to join the party and start work on his own game, Flowstone Saga. They both join us this week to talk about their projects, how Impact Gameworks came to be, and the many fascinating aspects of game development.

Emily Reese (of Level with Emily Reese fame) stops by The Roost to discuss her years-in-the-making interview series on Half Life: Alyx and what it was like to enter the fabled halls of Valve HQ. We also compare notes about podcast history, reminisce about Minecraft, and learn just a little bit about Minneapolis music history.

It’s a marcato brothers network family reunion, and you’re invited! Winter is upon us, and as the year winds down Jayson Napolitano joins us to reminisce about his Scarlet Moon’s last year. Scarlet Moon is a VGM production company that’s worked with everyone from Jake Kaufman to Hiroki Kikuta. They released a bevy of interesting albums this year, topped off most appropriately by their fifth edition of the Scarlet Moon Christmas album. So pour yourself a cup of hot coco and take a seat for the first annual Christmas at the Roost!

Sackboy: A Big Adventure wouldn't be half so colorful without the huge cast of creative musicians contributing to its lovingly patchwork soundtrack. With the help of percussionist Doug Perry and woodwind expert Kristin Naigus, composer Lena Raine connected these disparate styles together with a five-part map theme that spans the world in more ways than one. And, at one point or another, nobody knew what they were doing.

Aivi Tran and Sabrielle Augstin sit down with some crisp apple cider for a chat about Ikenfell, a seasonally-appropriate RPG about friendship, mystery, and witches. Together the two composers swap stories about weaving inclusivity throughout the whole game and explore its musical roots, from Final Fantasy VIII to Canadian folk music.
